New research has shown that trifluralin sprayed with higher water rates of about 100L/ha improves the herbicide's effectiveness on paddocks with heavy stubble loads, regardless of the spraying speed... Dr Borger said that in trials conducted at Cunderdin and Wongan Hills in 2011, the amount of annual ryegrass which survived 2.5L/ha of trifluralin decreased from 19 to 14 per cent when the water rate was increased from 50 to 100L/ha... " the results show that trifluralin should still work well in most areas of WA, as long as it is applied correctly, and that cases of reduced effectiveness will usually be due to lower water rates on heavy stubble loads, not resistance," Dr Borger said...

Growers using integrated weed management (IWM), including the strategic use of herbicides, can control ryegrass, despite high levels of resistance, researchers from the WA Department of Agriculture at Geraldton have found... "Growers who added IWM techniques such as a pasture phase, crop-topping and windrow burning (or chaff cart) generally managed to erode a ryegrass seed bank, reducing weed competition with the crop and reducing the selection pressure placed on trifluralin and other herbicides... Mr Newman says results give growers, researchers and agribusiness confidence that IWM works in real-life situations. "..

Malathion is a known inhibitor of cytochrome P-450 enzymes and has been shown to overcome resistance to pendimethalin, but not trifluralin, both group D herbicides... Malathion (0 and 12 kg a.i. ha-1) and trifluralin (0, 200, 400, 800 and 1600 g a.i. ha-1) were applied to seeds on the soil surface using a laboratory sprayer (100 L ha-1) and covered with soil... In the absence of malathion, SLR31 exhibited resistance to trifluralin with LD50 of 361 g ha-1 and GR50 of 317 g ha-1...

The objectives of the study were to determine the extent of trifluralin resistance, the risk factors resulting in trifluralin resistance and examine alternatives to trifluralin for control of annual ryegrass in wheat... Trifluralin # is widely used in no-till farming systems for the control of annual ryegrass... The simulations suggest that no-till use of trifluralin increases the risk of resistance by up to three years due to greater control of the annual ryegrass population by the herbicide...
