Ripper trials to overturn compaction constraints.. The brothers say soil constraints associated with compaction, including acidity, sodicity and aluminium toxicity, affect part of every paddock on their 23,000-hectare property, with yield losses of up to 0.5 tonnes/ha in some areas... "We hope the deep-ripping coupled with applying organic matter in the root zone will help crop roots to proliferate, the soil to open up and maybe also overcome some soil chemical problems," Dr Blackwell says...

Ms Ganesalingam applied biometric techniques to analyse seven years of national canola blackleg resistance trial data, providing what her supervisor at the University of Western Australia, Professor Wallace Cowling, describes as a "remarkable improvement" in the stability of the analysis... With the long-term analysis over seven years, Aanandini found that some varieties have stable variety resistance ratings," says Professor Cowling. ".. By using the latest MET analysis, Aanandini has shown that large GxE interactions occur in canola blackleg disease across sites over the years but this GxE can be modelled to improve the analysis and thereby improve our understanding of blackleg resistance in canola varieties," she says.
