Brome grass is becoming an increasing problem... Both species are commonly referred to as ripgut brome often resulting in confusion over correct identification... Recent research has shown that seed collected from field populations of both species are showing longer dormancy which appears to be under hormonal control within the seed embryo...

Growers looking to improve the effectiveness of furrow sowing on water-repellent sandplain soils can inspect new trials during a field walk hosted by the West Midlands Group (WMG) on Friday, June 29... The trials on Colin McAlpine's Badgingarra property have been established as part of Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) supported non-wetting soils research conducted by the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA)... "Winged points or seeding boots that help keep repellent soil out of the furrow, and wetting agents that help wet up repellent soil in the furrow are being investigated as possible methods to improve the efficacy of furrow sowing on repellent sands," Dr Davies said...

Mouldboard ploughing could help lift yields in sandy soils.. Trials in WA show mechanical soil inversion could reduce soil constraints and herbicide-resistant weeds in sandy soils By Nicole Baxter Key points Researchers say inverting sandplain soils using a mouldboard plough or rotary spader once every 10 to 15 years could help manage 'hostile' subsoils, non-wetting sands and herbicide-resistant weeds... Dr Davies says deep-ripping to remove compaction resulted in similar increases in productivity, but the added benefits of mouldboard ploughing include improved weed control, reduced soil water repellence and an opportunity to increase soil pH through lime incorporation...

A new report outlines actions taken by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) in response to local priority issues identified by Western Australian grain growers... The GRDC's 2014-15 Regional Cropping Solutions Networks (RCSNs) Annual Report provides a summary of recent activities initiated by WA's five RCSNs, and an overview of the GRDC's investment planning process for grains research, development and extension (RD&E)... High priority issues identified in 2014-15 by WA RCSNs include profitable rotations; subsoil constraints; acidity; herbicide resistance; nematodes and soil-borne diseases; canola and the need for better agronomic packages for this crop; frost; non-wetting soils; management of seasonal and soil variability; and business management...

Water-repellent soils affect 30 per cent of Australia's cropping land, mostly in Western Australia... "We can look inside complex soils, such as vertisols, and can segment out the root system and can also see water in three dimensions in real soil samples, held undisturbed, or intact, from the field," Professor Young says... "People look at the weight or quantity of water available for plants, but it is really the surface tension between the soil and the water - the contact angle of that fine water film - that controls how water moves in soil, not the amount of water," Professor Young says...

A range of one-year trials investigating non-wetting soils are underway in the western part of the Kwinana port zone after receiving funding from the GRDC. Image: A crop planted in non-wetting soil... "The networks were established under the Rural Cropping Solutions (RCS) initiative, which is part of a renewed effort by the GRDC to reduce the time it takes for new varieties, practices and technologies to be adopted, with the ultimate aim being to increase the profitability of the Australian grains industry," he says... Mr Roberts says the trials resulted from the Kwinana west RCSN calling for expressions of interest from groups or individuals to apply for funding through the GRDC...
