Timely application of N can improve yield and protein of a wheat crop (Hill 2005)... The use of precision sowing to plant into the ridge of the previous season will influence crop behaviour... It is suspected that the application of results from this trial may be limited to the deep sandy earth sand plain soils in the medium rainfall zone...

Clay and spading helps rebuild non-wetting soils.. On 19 July 2010, after about 78mm of rain, the nil treatment (Figure 1) had a lower plant density and went on to yield 0.66t/ha, while the 260t/ha of clay incorporated by spading plot (Figure 2) had a high plant density and went on to yield 1.41t/ha... In 2010 Trevor had electromagnetic surveys (EM38), gamma-ray spectrometry (radiometrics) and deep soil analysis done for measuring and mapping the depth to clay and he used these maps in 2011 to strictly apply clay only where it was needed...

Trials of mouldboard ploughing to alleviate non-wetting soils near Corrigin have produced impressive initial results including high crop yields and low weed numbers in what was a poor performing paddock... The CFIG research is also investigating other options for non-wetting soils including wetting agents, winged points and in-row seeding (as opposed to inter-row seeding) and is one of five RCS non-wetting soils projects in the western part of the Kwinana port zone... Mr Wallwork said the trial results reflected findings from the northern grainbelt which showed that mouldboard ploughing effectively changed the soil type by bringing subsoil to the surface...

Joe says yields averaged across the whole property tend to be 3t/ha for wheat, just under 3t/ha for barley and canola 1.7t/ha, although in 2012 they lost 40 per cent of the canola to frost... Joe says the main change implemented since the family's move to Esperance has been the steady transition towards total-cropping, and this stems largely from technological advances... With their wheat, Joe and his sons, Troy and Joey, have been progressing from APW to H1 and H2 varieties through a late application of Flexi N liquid nitrogen to bring protein up to 12 per cent...

Select a seeding system for your soil.. "When selecting for a higher SBU system, there are many factors to consider including single or double shoot, distinct split-rows or a wide band sowing, integrated opener design or wing attachment for an existing opener, and fertiliser placement relative to the seed zone," Dr Desbiolles said... "The best treatment, reaching over 90 percent emergence, in the Moorlands trial was obtained by adding a shallow operating scooping share ahead of a triple disc seeding system to clear away the top 3-4cm of soil into the inter-row zone and assist with placing seeds into moist soil," Dr Desbiolles said...

In a recent survey 96% of growers indicated their knowledge about soil health had increased as a result of this project; 94% indicated they were better at making decisions for their business regarding soil health and 91% indicated information from the Liebe Group had been useful for changing farm practices... Professor Daniel Murphy, of UWA, analysed results from the Liebe Group's long term Soil Biology Trial, which has been measuring soil organic carbon build up since 2003, and the results of this analysis have provided growers with an indication of realistic soil organic carbon levels that can be targeted... Seven fact sheets about soil amelioration have been produced. . They contain concise and practical information to be used as starting points for growers investigating soil amelioration options...

Mouldboard plough outperformed spader for weed suppression.. When the weed population was checked in March 2010 after a wet summer, Andrew says the results showed mouldboard ploughing had outperformed spading... The paddocks nominated for mouldboard ploughing are scheduled for the end of the sowing program, the delay allowing time for the opening rains to have thoroughly wet the soil down to 300mm...

The aim of the study was to determine how mouldboard ploughing (soil inversion), rotary spading and banded wetting agent affect the availability of soil nutrients... Soil moisture and pH were measured on a 5 x 5 cm grid and root maps were taken by marking each root intersection with the pit face on a transparent film... Our results from the first year of the study show that the method used to manage soil water repellence had little impact on soil nutrient supply with the exception of phosphorus...

The use of a mouldboard plough with a skimmer attached, that fully inverts the soil to bury weed seeds from on or near the surface to a depth of 15 cm or more, would result in a dramatic reduction of seedling emergence for the majority of weed species... Crop Updates is a partnership between the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia and the Grains Research & Development Corporation 282.. We still have many years ahead of growers experiencing the hardships of resistant weed management before they turn the corner and get on top of the problem...
