Barley growers in the Great Southern and South Coast regions of Western Australia are urged to test plants suspected of having net type net blotch (NTNB) this season to help confirm a new pathotype of this fungal disease... The Department of Agriculture and Food, WA (DAFWA) is conducting GRDC-funded research to verify information about NTNB pathotypes and is seeking samples of infected plant material... Seedling tests conducted by fellow DAFWA/Murdoch University pathologists Sanjiv Gupta and Jason Bradley indicated that other varieties that may also be more susceptible to NTNB include Hindmarsh , La Trobe , Scope CL and, possibly, Rosalind ...

The new age of soil phosphorus testing is.. Extensive testing over recent years and trial analysis this year have demonstrated that the DGT test offers considerable improvement in predicting soil available P levels on many cropping soils in south-eastern Australia... Dr Mason says the DGT test is a plastic device that uses an iron oxide gel as a P sink, which attracts available P through a membrane...

The research has been conducted in WA wheatbelt to determine if new and existing varieties of barley vary in tolerance to commonly used herbicides... The sensitivity of the variety is summarised, using the following symbols based on the yield responses across all trials: not tested or insufficient data.. (z) no significant yield reductions at recommended rates or higher than recommended rates in (z) trials x% (w/z) narrow margin, % yield reductions at higher than recommended rate, but not tested at recommended rate significant event occurring w years out of z years tested...

Soil testing the key to fertiliser savings.. According to the Crop Nutrition Fact Sheet published recently by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), results from more than 100,000 recent soil tests in the south-west of WA showed that most growers are operating at or above the soil P levels required... If the tests show that soil P status is sufficient, there may be an opportunity for growers to save money on P fertiliser by cutting back to a maintenance rate...

Proper storage underpins supplier reliability.. Philip Burrill of DAFF Queensland says growers should put the same effort into managing their grain in storage as they put into planting and growing the crop... To hold the gas (for example, phosphine) at the right concentration for the required time (for example, seven or 10 days), the silo does need to be gas-tight...

The research has been conducted across the Victorian Mallee to determine if new and existing varieties of wheat vary in tolerance to commonly used herbicides..
