Sustainable management of most cereal diseases can be achieved by avoiding susceptible and very susceptible cultivars... A graphical representation of the relative effect of increasing pre-sowing crown rot inoculum levels, as determined using PredictaB, on grain yield loss (%) in three cereals in seasons with below average combined September and October rainfall (left) and above average rainfall for the same period (right) using 26 data sets collected in Victoria and South Australia during the years 2005 to 2010 (Hollaway et al. 2013)... There will be a greater need to monitor and apply foliar fungicides in wetter seasons...

Septoria tritici blotch is a stubble-borne disease that is most likely to affect early-sown cereals and cereals sown into wheat stubble... Septoria tritici blotch (STB) has spread beyond the confines of the southern high-rainfall zone (HRZ) and into more medium-rainfall environments in South Australia, prompting warnings for growers across the state to be vigilant in monitoring and, if required, treating the disease this year... The severity and frequency of mutations in the Septoria pathogen population that confer fungicide, resistance may not be serious enough to affect the field performance of fungicides but problems will increase if growers are too dependent on chemicals to control the disease, Mr Poole says...

Cereal growth stages and decision making for fungicide timing.. The problem which soon became apparent to growers and advisers is that in the paddock it was difficult to calculate whether you had reached this disease threshold, not least because of the sporadic nature of the initial foci of the disease... Trial work on stripe rust control (GRDC project SFS00006 - 2002- 04) quickly established that foliar fungicide applications based on growth stages and applied between second node (GS32) and flag leaf emergence (GS39) or at both timings gave good control of the disease...

The blackleg fungus, Leptosphaeria maculans, has a high propensity to overcome resistance in Brassica napus (canola) cultivars... If you have a blackleg problem and are growing a susceptible cultivar your first action should be to change to a cultivar with higher levels of resistance... The best policy is to monitor the level of blackleg in your cultivar on your farm, if you observe the level of disease increasing then switch to a different group...

In comparing while many farm decisions are made intuitive versus logical analytical under the influence of a DSS which provide learning reasoning he suggests the either/or approach to on a topic, they are not necessarily used every time the dichotomies is destructive and goes on to say a decision is made...
