The stakeholder briefings allowed questions and discussions on how the GRDC, researchers and growers need to communicate and collaborate to meet not just the ongoing production challenges, but also some far-reaching changes to research support and also the supply chain that delivers the harvest to our customers...

In a report commissioned by the GRDC on the possibilities for biomass ethanol production, Canberra-based consultants Emergent Futures suggest Australia should not rush into biomass ethanol production but take a "wait and see" approach and follow developments in North America... The report identifies three biomass "hotspots" that could suit the development of biomass ethanol plants: Moree in northern NSW, Griffith in southern NSW and the Yorke/Mid-North region of South Australia... While the report"s author, Paul Higgins, cannot see Australian biomass ethanol commercialised until at least 2011, he recommends that the GRDC maintain a watching brief on the industry and carry out more extensive mapping of potential biomass sources...
