Mullewa grower Andrew Messina is trialling a new deep-ripper that can slice 80 centimetres into the soil to crack hard pans and help overcome compaction issues... Andrew says in 12m-wide and 200m-long paddock strip trials on an area that had been mouldboard ploughed in 2011, the deep-rippers produced wheat yields of 2.7 tonnes per hectare, compared with 2t/ha from the nil-treated area and 2.3 to 2.4t/ha from a conventional deep plough (tilling to a depth of 30cm)... Andrew says the main drawback of ripping to depths below 30cm is having to use a much smaller machine - the Heliripper is about 6m wide, travels at a speed of 7 to 8 kilometres per hour and treats about 5ha/hour...

Growers in WA are using powerful deep-ripper implements to break through hardpans and allow plant roots and nutrients to reach deeper, more productive depths.. Trials were undertaken at three sites using various types of rippers and configurations for depth and spacing, including machinery depths to 20, 30 and 40 centimetres and tyne spacings of 30 and 60cm... "The results reinforce the importance of doing small plot trials before applying extreme treatments across paddocks, as well as knowing the characteristics of the subsoil and using an experienced machinery operator - to minimise the risks of negative impacts such as bringing too much clay or rock to the surface," she says...

Deep ripping not appropriate for all soil types A comprehensive understanding of the cause and location of high soil strength is required before undertaking deep ripping as research has shown it is does not provide an economic solution in some soil types... KEY POINTS Deep ripping of compacted soils is most likely to improve grain yields on sandy soils and where compaction has occurred on upper parts of the soil profile through machinery traffic or livestock trampling... Overall, compacted subsoils impede root growth, causing reduced plant vigour and poorer water-use efficiency as roots have limited access to water and nutrients, especially in the subsoil...
