Increase the direct exposure of agency researchers to key prioritised industry research questions and needs... A secondary component of this work was to examine the impact of early desiccation timing to both maximise the opportunity to save soil moisture and potentially shorten the re-cropping interval... The clear advantage over previous approaches is to ensure that the actual question or focus of this work is much more driven by industry rather than by the researcher...

A project is underway in southern NSW to help growers put broadleaf species into crop rotations to improve grain production and profitability... NSW DPI research scientist Dr Guangdi Li, based at Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute, says each of the grower groups is responsible for coordinating large-scale studies to compare crop performance with and without broadleaf species, while researchers concentrate on the benefits of break crops on nitrogen nutrition, disease break and weeds aspects... Dr Li says the project aims to identify whether profitable broadleaf cropping rotations are available as alternatives to continuous cereal cropping, and to provide guidelines for grain growers and their advisers on when and where to include what break crops to achieve the best outcome...

With half of his 2023-hectare cropping program sown to canola, it is imperative that Lower Eyre Peninsula farmer David Giddings applies best-management practices to avoid the fungal disease blackleg... "In the region the density of canola makes it impossible to sow 500 metres from last year's canola stubble, as recommended, so I have to apply all other management options vigilantly," David says... "Previously we sowed canola at 5kg/ha but reducing the seeding rate and sowing earlier has seen an improvement in disease, yield and water use efficiency across our sandy loam soils, many of which have a sodic subsoil."..

Long-season canolas reshape seasonal management.. Bruce McLean inspects his long-season canola, which was sown in December last year and grazed over summer before being locked up for harvest in June... I've heard through trial results in Victoria's Western District that good root establishment with this type of canola is the main yield driver, and that's what we've got with our crop," he says...

Kukri Aprovided a useful level of resistance to crown rot and raised soil inoculum levels of crown rot less than Frame .A Canopy management treatments were inconclusive but were promising enough to be pursued in 2005... Soil sampling methods for assessing crown rot inoculum levels in the soil and the risk categories associated with those inoculum levels need to be reviewed for Eyre Peninsula (EP) and other low rainfall, light soil regions... More research is needed to explore the relative contribution of varietal resistance levels and of plant material produced to this effect of varieties and crops on soil inoculum levels...

Canopy management refers to the management of the green surface area of the crop canopy to optimise crop yield and inputs... "In WA, we tend to grow big, bulky cereal crops - we use high seeding rates and put out a lot of nitrogen early - and then crops can run out of moisture come grain filling time, resulting in a lower grain yield than would have been achieved with a thinner canopy... Mr Knell said the project would validate canopy management principles already learnt under research in other grain growing areas including high rainfall zones in South Australia, Victoria and New Zealand...
