Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

New tests to measure soil health are being developed to help with planning and managing cropping programs... As chair of the GRDC research sub-program for varieties, member of the pulses and oilseed subcommittee and as a board member for the Molecular Plant Breeding Cooperative Research Centre, Jeff was keen to ensure plant breeders had the resources and support to develop new varieties that met future agronomic and market demands... GRDC board member David Shannon, who farms at Kapunda, SA, says Jeff was a likeable, intelligent and quietly spoken man who had a clear understanding of grains industry issues: "He was a true gentleman and was prepared to speak out on behalf of others when necessary," David says...

Western Australian grain growers may need to consider adjusting 2014 nitrogen fertiliser strategies due to the influence of high stubble loads and a dry summer and autumn on plant available nitrogen in the soil... Mr Ryan suggested growers use these results and assess stubble loads to determine if additional fertiliser was required, and consider adjusting their nitrogen application method at seeding time or using split (separate) nitrogen applications which could decrease any risk of low nitrogen availability... "Knowing your current soil nitrogen status; stubble density; stubble quality (including the amount of nitrogen relative to carbon); and soil moisture content can help you manage fertiliser applications and rates to ensure that adequate nitrogen is supplied to the crop," he said...

Opportunities exist for grain growers in the southern cropping region to more effectively manage weeds in retained stubble systems, according to new research conducted by the CSIRO and funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)... "The data shows very large differences between regions for practices like harvest weed seed control, crop topping and double knockdown which reflects past differences in the levels of herbicide resistance, but we're now seeing resistance issues becoming much more important in all cropping regions," Dr Llewellyn said...
