Influence of fungicide rate (mean of fungicide products - four site mean) Stem rust control assessed over the four trial sites revealed that using high rates was essential for the control of the disease, even if the fungicide had been applied prophylactically (before infection was visible in the crop)... Influence of cultivar resistance and fungicide application (Prosaro ) on yield and stem rust severity measured on the flag sheath 18 days after fungicide application at early dough (GS82) and assessed at mid dough - physiological maturity (GS85-90) - Bairnsdale, Gippsland, Victoria, 2010... The yield potential for the crop with no nitrogen applied is estimated at GS30 from the results of numerous of trials conducted in that region where NDVI at GS30 is divided by the number of growing degree days (GDD) greater than 0 C since planting, referred to as the INSEY units (in season estimate of yield)...

Cereal growth stages and decision making for fungicide timing.. The problem which soon became apparent to growers and advisers is that in the paddock it was difficult to calculate whether you had reached this disease threshold, not least because of the sporadic nature of the initial foci of the disease... Trial work on stripe rust control (GRDC project SFS00006 - 2002- 04) quickly established that foliar fungicide applications based on growth stages and applied between second node (GS32) and flag leaf emergence (GS39) or at both timings gave good control of the disease...

With the up-front options, Flutriafol (Intake) on starter fertiliser provided the longest protection with only low levels of infection (<5%) evident on the flag leaves of Ellison at North Star during flowering... The impact of stripe rust on Ellison averaged a yield loss of 1.8t/ha (35%) when comparing the full disease control treatment (Intake + 145mL/ha of tebuconazole at GS32 + GS39) to the nil control (Figure 1)... It should be stressed that for these trials we obtained good coverage of the starter fertiliser (Granulock 12Z) with the various in-furrow treatments due to our ability to rapidly dry the wet fertiliser after treatment due to the small volumes required...

With winter crop sowing well underway across New South Wales, wheat growers are being reminded to stay vigilant on stripe rust... NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) senior plant pathologist Dr Steven Simpfendorfer has two key messages for growers as the season progresses - monitor crops regularly for any signs of rust infection and tailor fungicide strategies to varietal resistance level, rainfall zone, growth stage and seasonal conditions... Speaking at the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Grains Research Updates earlier this year, Dr Simpfendorfer said the stripe rust risk was always present and urged growers not to drop the ball on management, particularly around minimum disease standards...

" Date: 28.09.2010 HIGHER NITROGEN NUTRITION INCREASES THE SEVERITY OF STRIPE RUST.. Significant increases in the severity of stripe rust with higher levels of N application did not appear to be associated with increases in canopy size (biomass), which is believed to provide a microclimate more conducive to stripe rust infection... In one study, increases in the severity of stripe rust and stem rust were observed with the application of nitrate-N, but decreases were observed with ammonium-N, although both N forms would have been expected to increase canopy size...

Wellings-1 2009 season overview Seasonal conditions in 2009 throughout the Australian winter cereal regions were characteristically variable, with early hopes dashed in some areas and surprising above average rain in winter giving prospects for excellent harvests across regions that initially seemed set for another disappointing year... The regions south and east of Wagga Wagga were the exception in this region with good rainfall and cool conditions during flowering and seed set... A similar situation could be described for the SE region of South Australia, The Mallee (Victoria and South Australia), the Mid North and Eyre Peninsular regions of South Australia, and Western Australia all experienced good seasonal conditions with prospects for above average yields...

The crop was assessed for stripe rust infection at a number of stages throughout the trial... ANOVA was used to assess treatment affects on yield with the calculated LSD used to separate significant mean at the 95% confidence level... Using the table above assuming the pre-grazing tillering spray was sufficient to control any Yr infection present at that time we can extrapolate the disease effects from other effects that grazing may have had such as canopy manipulation...
