Several editions ago, I mentioned that the GRDC was involved with the state departments of agriculture, the Australian Government, CSIRO, agricultural universities and grower representatives to develop a National Strategy for Grains Research Development and Extension (RD&E)... Following endorsement by the Primary Industries Standing Committee, the strategy is scheduled to be presented to the Primary Industries Ministerial Council in November... If implemented with the appropriate amount of focus, the strategy will help drive our collective investments in research, development and extension to optimise inputs from investors and providers from the public sector, while encouraging greater investment from the private sector...

"Growers should be using a number of techniques at the same time - chemical and cultural - that when combined provide sufficient control to reduce numbers to levels where a susceptible crop, particularly canola, is able to withstand the low numbers that remain," Mr Midwood says... "Evidence would suggest that burning the stubble gives you a better level of control of slugs because you're removing the habitat," Mr Midwood says. ".. "Press wheels tick the box from the crop emergence point of view, but if you're sowing on a 200 to 300-millimetre row spacing and you're using a narrow press wheel, there's all that area in between the rows where there's no consolidation of soil, so it's easy for slugs to move between the rows," he says...

In summary, it could be argued that none of the currently available preemergence herbicides have the required stability in efficacy to become viable alternatives to postemergence group A or imidazolinone herbicides... Modelling the risks involved with splitting N application at Bellata over a number of years.. Current best nitrogen management practice is generally to assess soil water and soil nitrogen levels before sowing, estimate yield potential and fertilise all prior to, or at, sowing because it is too risky to apply in-crop... There is a large decrease in frequency from one to two rainfall events, suggesting growers would need to be very organised and be able to respond in a short time frame to take advantage of incrop N application opportunities...

Mediterranean white and conical snails will serve as test subjects in a pilot study that may lead to the adoption of gene-silencing technology for crop pest-control applications... Dubbed "daughterless technology", the strategy involves constructing a molecular switch that can turn off female development, creating male-only populations... Existing controls have proved only partially successful and involve practices that are increasingly unacceptable to growers, because they either promote soil erosion (such as stubble burning) or cause chemical contamination (pesticides)...
