An authority in soil science is among those suggesting closer long-term scrutiny of soil health using precision agriculture (PA) technology and on-farm trials to rectify areas where crops under-perform because of poor water use efficiency... Esperance-based David Hall, of the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA), says root growth and water use by crops are often restricted by subsoil constraints including sodicity, salinity, boron toxicity and acidity which, to some extent, can be alleviated by applying gypsum... At the Mt Madden Field Walk in September 2010, Mr Hall observed the crop growth differences between the treatments highlighted the short-term benefit of gypsum in helping to increase crop emergence, root growth, water infiltration and water storage...

Moisture probes put hard data into crop planning.. Bruce says he installed the probes for three reasons: to assess how much moisture is in the profile to help with crop planning; to ensure nitrogen is not wasted on crops that do not have sufficient subsoil moisture to support additional biomass production; and to assist with marketing decisions - as an accurate picture of available moisture will help, particularly if they forward sell their grain... Bruce says the controlled-traffic farming system, introduced in 2006, has several benefits including: a 20 per cent reduction in fuel use; better soil structure, improving water infiltration and plant root development; better paddock access enabling more timely applications; and the ability to more easily implement inter-row planting of crops into the previous year's stubble...

CliMate estimates stored soil moisture based on individual paddock data, such as the length of the fallow period, the amount of soil organic matter, stubble load, soil type and rainfall received during the fallow period... Research undertaken over several years by NSW DPI staff such as Col McMaster and Barry Haskins (now a private researcher/consultant) noted that delayed or missed fallow weed control opportunities quickly led to loss of stored soil moisture, as well as loss of more than 40kg/ha of available soil nitrogen...

Slow maturing wheat yields solution to changing climate.. The research project monitored four wheat varieties planted across trial sites at Lake Bolac and Westmere (Vic) in the high rainfall zone, Temora and Junee (NSW) in the medium rainfall zone, and Condoblin (NSW) in the low rainfall zone, with each variety planted between mid-April and late May... Although dry conditions late in winter at Condoblin meant all varieties sown mid-April to mid-May had roughly the same yields, low density plantings benefitted the yield of slow maturing varieties Eaglehawk and Bolac , but reduced yield in fast maturing wheats sown later...
