Storing oilseeds is more difficult than storing cereal grains as they are more susceptible to quality deterioration and have limited insect control options... The decision to store oilseeds requires a planned approach, careful management and a suitable storage system... Moisture content in oilseeds must be lower than cereal grains because the oil content increases the risk of moulding and quality damage...

Dormancy and water sensitivity are undesirable post-harvest because barley varieties with these two traits generally need months of storage for the seed to be suitable for malting... Dr Reuss and his team investigated three main options: using agricultural chemicals to break dormancy before or after storage.. After testing a total of 20 agricultural chemicals, the team found that several were so toxic that they could not be used (they killed the barley seed), and many did not effectively break dormancy...

Chickpeas provide an excellent break crop and gross margin opportunity for growers, and many are now realizing the importance of break crops in a farming system with the current expense of nitrogen... Operationally chickpeas fit very well into many farming systems, often being able to be sown before cereals and generally harvested after... Harvesting on time should be a priority in such a high valued crop...

The prospect of capturing higher grain prices can be tempting but in some circumstances investing large sums of money in on-farm grain storage could prove a costly mistake... "You need to work out exactly how much the storage could earn and compare that to expected returns from other farm business investments such as buying more land, a chaser bin, a wider boomspray, a second truck or paying off debt," Mr Warrick said... The template also contains calculations to work out the fixed costs of on-farm storage such as the annualised capital costs of all of the infrastructure, site works, concrete and equipment, as well as the opportunity cost of capital...

Chickpea harvest can often clash with wheat harvest and traditionally wheat has been given priority due to potential quality premiums... In short crops where soil contamination is likely to be a problem, fit perforated screens under the platform auger and/or broad elevator... Growers need to thoroughly clean all residues of other grain legumes from headers, planting equipment, shed floors, augers and empty trucks and storages after each harvest, and whenever legume seeds are handled on the farm...
