The fungal pathogens that cause rust diseases can only grow on living plant tissue, and will only survive on dead plants for a matter of weeks... The lack of living cereal plants during the noncropping summer period creates a "bottleneck" for rust pathogens, resulting in a huge reduction in the size of rust populations... GRDC Research Code US315 More information: Robert Park, 02 9351 8806, robertp@camden.usyd.edu.au [Photo (left) by Dr Grant Hollaway, Department of Primary Industries Victoria: Self-sown (volunteer) cereals - such as this wheat in the Wimmera in February 2005 - can harbour rust pathogens during the non-cropping summer period, providing a source of inoculum to initiate rust epidemics in the following cropping cycle.]..

Now available are Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Tips and Tactics publications for wheat leaf rust, stem rust and stripe rust, which have the potential to slash farm incomes during an outbreak... GRDC General Manager Crop Protection Ken Young said careful monitoring of crops was crucial and identification of rust infections in the previous year could help determine the threat of rust and other diseases in the following season... The Tips and Tactics publications, available at this link , include information about conditions that favour the diseases; disease identification; management strategies; frequently asked questions; submitting a suspected rust sample; and links to further information...

Develop a plan to maintain rust-resistant crops, growers urged.. CEREAL rust experts are issuing a clear warning to croppers to eliminate use of varieties that are susceptible or very susceptible to rust or they might be risking the resistance that protects many Australian cereal crops from the disease... University of Sydney's Professor Robert Park says growers need to think before they sow this year and consider the implications of managing rust outbreaks in 2013...

Screening of rust resistance in key stages of the breeding program (parent evaluation, segregating and fixed breeding lines) has integrated rust resistant lines into all stages of the breeding process... Important factors in production risk addressed in this project were susceptibility to rust diseases (stem, stripe and leaf rusts) and intolerance of pre-harvest sprouting... Sustained routine evaluation of rust resistance in key stages of the breeding program including parent evaluation, early (segregating) and late (fixed) breeding lines, including both field and glasshouse screening approaches...

"The 2014 season was unprecedented in terms of stem frost damage, with the Junee trial site experiencing 18 stem frost events and 75 frosts in total, and while the early-sown crops did not out-perform main-season wheats, the results were not too bad, and it was the first season in a very long time where early sowing was not by far the most profitable thing to do," Dr Hunt said... At Junee, winter wheats sown on April 7 yielded lower than spring wheats sown on May 21, with Gregory achieving 3t/ha compared to 2.5t/ha from Wedgetail... "There are other long-season wheat varieties available that have a higher stem rust resistance rating, including Bolac , Forrest , EGA-Wedgetail , Manning and SQP Revenue , and we recommend that growers should, if possible, look to growing these or others with stem rust resistance in the next season," he said...

A new cache of rust-resistance genes has been identified in durum wheat.. The new sources will increase diversity for rust resistance in modern varieties - By Dr Gio Braidotti.. Arthur Ernest Watkins may not have the posthumous name recognition of William Farrer but is belatedly leaving his mark on the world, thanks to a treasure trove of rust-resistance genes he left to wheat scientists and a modern world desperate to renew rust defences in wheat, especially against stem rust...
