Only one sample of wheat stripe rust was received from the western grains region in 2009, 2011 and 2012 ( Figure 1 )... Leaf and stem rusts of wheat, oats and barley were also reported in WA this season, along with reports of wheat stripe rust in some crops of Mace ... It is important that growers continue to monitor their crops throughout the growing season and submit samples of any rusts found to the Australian Cereal Rust Survey for pathotype identification...

Western Australian growers with wheat crops susceptible to stem rust should be vigilant in checking crops and spray them early if they find the damaging disease... Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) supported fungicide trials conducted by the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) have highlighted the importance of responding early to wheat stem rust in susceptible varieties to minimise losses in yield and grain quality... " the strategy, when applied in trials in the high yielding environment of Gibson in the Esperance region, provided yields 56 per_cent greater than the unsprayed crop, and economic returns of $399 per hectare - compared with $83/ha from a single fungicide application at the first sign of the disease, and $111/ha for a single spray three weeks after the disease became evident," Dr Jayasena said...

Growers are urged to eliminate varieties that are susceptible or very susceptible to rusts from their cropping programs to help preserve the disease resistance that protects many Australian crops... In 2011, an industry survey found that growers generally choose varieties based on yield potential, without considering the costs of disease management and yield losses... A planned approach to rust management at the beginning of the growing season, instead of when an outbreak occurs, aims to reduce the potential for major yield losses resulting from rust...
