The future of oat stem rust resistance in Australia depends on identifying and introgressing new sources of resistance into adapted varieties in conjunction with strategies recommended for the new Australian Cereal Rust Control Program... The project will use cytogenetic techniques to transfer sources of stem and leaf rust resistance from wild oat species into breeding lines which can be easily used by breeders to develop new rust resistant oat varieties... The project builds on the results of two previous GRDC funded projects, DAS00031 and DAS00074 which demonstrated the existence of novel sources of leaf rust resistance in the wild oat species Avena strigosa and A abyssinica, and stem rust resistance in A damascena, A longiglumis, A murphyi, A prostrata and A sterilis...

Time of sowing trials run by SARDI in South Australia in 2014 showed that despite widespread frost damage, the highest yields still resulted from wheat sown in mid to late April... The ideal sowing time for Trojan will be May 1 (10 days earlier)... "There are other long-season wheat varieties available that have a higher stem rust resistance rating, including Bolac , Forrest , EGA-Wedgetail , Manning and SQP Revenue , and we recommend that growers should, if possible, look to growing these or others with stem rust resistance in the next season," he said...

With growers gearing up to plant large winter crop acreages into high levels of soil moisture, the Plant Breeding Institute (PBI) has released the 2012 leader table for rust responses by variety... The annual report lists rust responses across the range of Australian commercial wheat and triticale varieties and now includes vulnerabilities to leaf and stem rust as well as stripe rust... Rusted plant samples can be mailed to PBI for analysis in paper envelopes (do not use plastic wrapping or plastic lined packages)...

New evidence supports the long-held belief of plant pathologists that cereal rust diseases can survive the non-cropping summer months... The results should be considered an early warning for Yr17 varieties known to be vulnerable to this pathotype, and will serve to remind growers and advisers to carefully monitor crops," he said...
