The labels on haloxyfop products used for post-emergent grass control in canola crops are to be amended to overcome concerns that the 'Directions for Use' have the potential to be misinterpreted... In particular there is concern that the directions with respect to the correct application window and appropriate withholding period have not been clear enough to ensure users fully comply with domestic and international residue limits... Application later in the crop cycle - after stem elongation - can result in the crop retaining haloxyfop residues in the canola seed and seed products...

Influence of fungicide rate (mean of fungicide products - four site mean) Stem rust control assessed over the four trial sites revealed that using high rates was essential for the control of the disease, even if the fungicide had been applied prophylactically (before infection was visible in the crop)... Influence of cultivar resistance and fungicide application (Prosaro ) on yield and stem rust severity measured on the flag sheath 18 days after fungicide application at early dough (GS82) and assessed at mid dough - physiological maturity (GS85-90) - Bairnsdale, Gippsland, Victoria, 2010... The yield potential for the crop with no nitrogen applied is estimated at GS30 from the results of numerous of trials conducted in that region where NDVI at GS30 is divided by the number of growing degree days (GDD) greater than 0 C since planting, referred to as the INSEY units (in season estimate of yield)...

Nick Poole from the Foundation for Arable Research says new tools to fight leaf diseases and respond to crops' nitrogen needs could be worth hundreds of dollars a hectare to high-rainfall zone growers... PHOTO: Kellie Penfold New tools to fight leaf diseases and respond to crops' nitrogen needs have been developed for cereal growers in the high-rainfall zone (HRZ), following a three-year project by the Foundation for Arable Research... "For example, our previous research gave confidence to cereal growers to delay nitrogen and fungicide decisions until stem elongation," Mr Poole says...

Understanding and applying the principles of canopy management, allows decisions on the most profitable use of inputs and the most appropriate target yield to be made... Applying nitrogen (N) or fungicide at stem elongation increases the opportunity to match input costs to the potential yield for that season... The visual difference can be quantified by using crop sensors that measure the light reflectance from the crop canopy...

Canola growers are being urged to recheck label directions for products containing haloxyfop following changes to labels that clarify the correct timing for applying the herbicide... Herbicides containing haloxyfop as the active ingredient (such as Verdict 520, Asset or Inquest ) are the main choice among most growers... If this group of herbicides is used in canola and other oilseeds, it must not be applied after the eight-leaf stage of the crop, or if stem elongation has started before the eight-leaf stage...
