Knowledge of the on-farm conditions that contribute to the fungal disease eyespot could help grain growers avoid the up to 65 per cent yield losses that can result from the disease in wheat... Conditions that encourage eyespot to develop are: some rainfall each day over a prolonged period; and/or high moisture levels at the base of crop plants, which can result from stubble, humidity or weeds, such as soursob... Ultimately I don't believe this has been to the detriment of the soil as we are travelling on rm ground and getting a better mix, a leveller paddock and better conditions to sow into with our Simplicity Bar'... Over the last decade there has been a large shift by Mallee farmers to adopt stubble retention systems with no-till in their farming systems... Key factors include: Growers that have been utilising stubble retention and no-till farming systems for many years are facing production and profitability constraints and have general concerns that their farming system as a whole is not performing as well as it should be, relative to more traditional farming systems involving low groundcover and higher erosion risks... Project outcomes will be achieved by employing a range of project activities that combine targeted local extension to address gaps in motivation, attitude and ability with on-farm field trial activities designed in collaboration with local farmers and advisors in mallee (including Victoria, NSW and SA) to fill gaps in local knowledge and understanding...
