Growers in southern NSW are used to dealing with frost at flowering in spring, and switching to slow maturing cultivars when sowing early is essential to avoid flowering frost damage... The effects of genes on traits in wheat of commercial importance were estimated using large plant breeding data sets, diagnostic markers and sophisticated statistical methods... The earliest successes occurred with the genes controlling grain quality in wheat, in particular enabling wheat breeders to select against alleles, or variants, of the glutenin and puroindoline genes that had negative effects on dough rheology traits (dough strength and dough extensibility) and on milling yield... It is suspected that Glu-D3 might interact with storage protein activator (SPA) genes the project team has begun typing the same lines used for Glu-D3 with a diagnostic marker developed by French scientists for SPA-B. Wheat breeding collaborators in Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) and LongReach have given this a high priority, because interactions between SPA and glutenin genes might explain why cultivars such as Bolac have higher than expected grain quality, while the reverse occurs for cultivars such as H45 ...

Dual-purpose crops can provide flexibility in sowing time, forage at a key time of the year and in some cases can increase returns from crops... Our research has shown that defoliation of crops can slow early water use (see Fig 4) compared to undefoliated crops... We believe the high yield penalties occurred because the crop had insufficient time to achieve adequate biomass at flowering in order to fully recover grain yield ; this is particularly an issue in the northern region where crops develop very quickly...

Charles Sturt University PhD student Felicity Harris has been investigating why winter wheat varieties produce less early season growth than main-season or spring wheat varieties... The development of wheat varieties with vigorous early season growth would go a long way towards helping boost the profitability of many of Australia's mixed farms where cereal crops are grown for grazing and grain... According to Ms Harris, the genes responsible for vernalisation and photoperiod can act together or separately in particular wheats, with many unknowns (see issue 97 of Ground Cover , March-April 2012, pages 20-21)... "We have molecular markers available to detect the presence of certain genes that influence how wheat plants grow and develop in response to vernalisation and photoperiod, but there are many more genes and markers to be discovered," she says...

"The 2014 season was unprecedented in terms of stem frost damage, with the Junee trial site experiencing 18 stem frost events and 75 frosts in total, and while the early-sown crops did not out-perform main-season wheats, the results were not too bad, and it was the first season in a very long time where early sowing was not by far the most profitable thing to do," Dr Hunt said... At Junee, winter wheats sown on April 7 yielded lower than spring wheats sown on May 21, with Gregory achieving 3t/ha compared to 2.5t/ha from Wedgetail... "There are other long-season wheat varieties available that have a higher stem rust resistance rating, including Bolac , Forrest , EGA-Wedgetail , Manning and SQP Revenue , and we recommend that growers should, if possible, look to growing these or others with stem rust resistance in the next season," he said...
