As a green manure crop, soybeans provide good quantities of dry matter and large amounts of nitrogen... Better efficacy could be obtained by using smaller nozzles and lower water rates on small weeds... The problem with the system in the wet tropics is that decomposition is rapid and much of the available nitrogen will be lost through leaching or denitrification under waterlogged conditions...

Pulse and oilseed legumes such as soybeans and peanuts form associations with rhizobia bacteria, causing nodules to form on roots... The nitrogen (N) fixed by the legume is strongly linked to the productivity of that crop... Initial results showed that the growth and yield of soybean was significantly improved by inoculation with Group H rhizobia (strain CB1809), but the form in which the inoculant was applied made little or no difference to productivity - even under suboptimal moisture conditions after planting...

To minimise losses consider: cutting as low as practical to gather as many of the pods as possible using reduced ground speeds to keep shatter loss to minimum (4 - 5 km/h) using relatively low cylinder speeds to reduce grain damage, and select relatively high fan speeds to effectively clean the sample using belt augers wherever possible to minimise cracking and damage to the grain... Both oil content and protein level are usually calculated back to a 12% moisture content basis... Separated hulls are included...

Soybean rescues sugarcane from degraded soils.. Condong, NSW, soybean grower Mark North spoke at the Summer Grains Conference... Mr North said the decision to produce soybean as a summer crop grew out of an Industry and Investment NSW program derived from the 'Sugar Yield Decline Joint Venture' involving Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries, BSES Sugarcane, Biological Crop Protection and the Sugar Research and Development Corporation...

Recent field days in south-eastern Australia have given growers the opportunity to consider options for growing soybeans.. Soybean research agronomist Luke Gaynor (right) and climate specialist Dale Grey (left) say a near-full profile of moisture beneath the crop when 20 per cent of pods are turning yellow is important to ensure a high-yielding crop and enough stored soil moisture for the following cereal crop... When harvesting soybeans, Mr Gaynor said that large variations in seed moisture have an impact on total seed protein: "When growers are testing their soybeans after harvest they need to adjust their seed moisture content (on paper) back to 12 per cent or a dry matter basis for a fair comparison of total seed protein, especially when selling into the human-consumption market."..

Etiella larvae ( Etiella behrii ) have infested an estimated 50 percent of mungbean pods in a crop in the Moree region, raising concern this season's crops will return smaller yields leading into harvest... Commonly known as lucerne seed web moth, etiella larvae normally attack pods but in recent years early infestations have attacked mungbean and soybean buds and flowers and have tunnelled into plant stems... Hugh Brier, senior entomologist from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) Kingaroy, said the larvae leave a near-invisible entry hole into pods making them very difficult to detect...
