Loopers can be distinguished from helicoverpa by: their 'looping' action when walking by their body, which tapers to the head they have only two pairs of hind legs, as opposed to four for helicoverpa... Loopers appear susceptible to all insecticides used for helicoverpa control, with the exception of Gemstar and Vivus (NPVs) which only act against helicoverpa... Dipel (Bt) is far more effective against loopers than against helicoverpa but thorough coverage is required for best results...

Research extends pesticides use.. New uses of pesticides for mungbeans, faba beans, canola and wheat have been approved during the past year, following research coordinated by Plant Health Australia (PHA) as part of the GRDC's Crop Protection Program... The GRDC has funded two PHA projects to facilitate applications to the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (AVPMA), resulting in minor use permits for: tebuconazole on mungbeans to control powdery mildew; and tebuconazole on faba beans to control Cercospora leaf spot and rust...

Overall, both models are acceptable for modelling soil evaporation over a range of soils and seasons provided accurate soil physical properties and starting water states are known... Overall, populations increased five times compared to before planting the summer crops, but remained below 250/kg soil (Figure 4)...

Advice concerning the significance and control of the more common pests, or potential pests, of these crops is presented... Value of the crop (high value crops cannot sustain too much damage as a small loss in yield or quality could mean a large financial loss), the cost of the spray and its application and the likely yield or quality benefit gained from control... Crop monitoring Ongoing monitoring of crops and surrounding vegetation is essential to determine the presence of both pests and predators, and when, if any, intervention is required to keep pests at an acceptable level or, if feasible, boost predator numbers by introducing them into the system...

Paddock records help: establish realistic target grain yield/protein levels prior to planting modify target yield/protein levels based on previous crop performance, planting soil moisture, planting time, fallow conditions, expected in-crop seasonal conditions and grain quality requirements determine appropriate fertiliser type, rate and application method compare expected with actual performance per paddock and modify fertiliser strategies to optimise future yield/protein levels... Valuable information obtainable from a soil test includes current nutrient status, acidity or alkalinity (pH), soil salinity (Electrical Conductivity (EC)) and sodicity (Exchangeable Sodium Percentage (E)), which can affect soil structure... Water volumes of 800-1 000 L/ha were commonly applied...

Do not plant varieties adapted to southern and central Queensland production areas and expect reasonable results in the central coastal region or further north... Best results for grain crops are achieved by planting in the third week of December through to the second week of June... The main management technique is to avoid conditions that cause weathering by timing planting and expected harvesting dates for low-risk periods...
