Grains research enters a new era.. The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has begun delivering on its pledge to secure the future viability of grain production in Queensland and New South Wales... With research suggesting that the majority of current farming systems are dramatically underachieving on water use efficiency, the GRDC is co-funding the innovative new project aimed at better understanding how northern farming systems can be improved to boost productivity and profitability...

A Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) workshop will be held in Finley next month to investigate top dressing crops in irrigated farming systems... They will discuss management options to increase yields, assessing crops to determine future nitrogen requirements, comparison of nitrogen rates for different management systems, strategies to minimise crop losses and product selection... More information on the workshop is available by phoning AgCommunicators on 08 8332 3277 or by visiting www.agcommunicators.com.au/workshops ...

HRZ growers urged to be prepared for STB threat.. Mr Poole says rusts are a "puppy" compared to STB because fungicides do not achieve the same level of control as seen with stripe rust in Australia, and because the disease has a longer latent period which makes it more difficult to determine its progress... With the STB pathogen becoming resistant to strobilurins and triazoles in other parts of world and with evidence that the pathogen in southern Australia has some of the early stage resistance mutations to triazoles, Mr Poole is urging growers to use an IDM strategy and not base control on fungicides alone...

"In looking at fungicide options, bear in mind the recent discovery by Dr Andrew Milgate at New South Wales Department of Primary Industries of strains of the disease that show mutations conferring reduced sensitivity (low level resistance) to a number of triazole fungicides," Mr Poole said...
