Blade, Kite, EGA Eagle Rock, and Sloop SA barley showed tolerance to metribuzin, exhibiting little change in seedling density and anthesis dry matter (DM) when treated with metribuzin (187.5 and 375 g/ha)... Estimates of regression parameter B (slope s.e.) for seedling density (plants/m2) and shoot DM (g/m2) of wheat genotypes treated with metribuzin (0, 187.5, and 375 g/ha) at a eld site at Cleve in 2004 Two-tailed t-tests were performed to compare differences in B (slope) values with Spear, a sensitive genotype... There is a need to identify alternative sources of metribuzin tolerance, which can be incorporated into Australian wheats...

The aim of the study was to determine how mouldboard ploughing (soil inversion), rotary spading and banded wetting agent affect the availability of soil nutrients... Soil moisture and pH were measured on a 5 x 5 cm grid and root maps were taken by marking each root intersection with the pit face on a transparent film... Our results from the first year of the study show that the method used to manage soil water repellence had little impact on soil nutrient supply with the exception of phosphorus...

The main focus of this project "Novel solutions for managing non-wetting soils", is to explore managements that promote water infiltration into non-wetting soils and increase crop production and profitability... At the beginning of the project a review will be done of current knowledge on strategies to manage non-wetting soils, including published research reports, grower knowledge and unpublished DAFWA reports...
