Danny Flanery's focus on soil health has resulted in canola yields increasing from just 50t when he was starting out to around 500t from the same area (2500ha) now... Danny could not afford the fencing or trees on the scale required to make an effective start on the remediation of his own property, but local Landcare coordinator Louise Hufton of the Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Authority (CMA) was able to set some wheels in motion to secure government assistance... Danny has planted trees across a total of 300ha, and he sees this as a way to reinvigorate the property's biodiversity, while providing shelter for stock, pasture and crops, and absorbing excess moisture in the gullies...

The race to get the winter wheat in and up is an increasing challenge for Western Australian grower Nick Gillett, who farms 9000 hectares at Bencubbin, north-east of Perth... Farm owners: Nick and Tryphena Gillett Location: Bencubbin, Western Australia Farm size: 9000 hectares of arable land Farm manager: Nick Gillett Rainfall: 310 millimetres (growing season: 225mm) Soil type: 50 per cent mallee; 30 per cent heavy clay; 20 per cent sand and gravel Soil pH: from 4.5 to 8.5 (continuous liming program to reach a minimum topsoil pH of 6) Crops: 5000ha wheat, 2000ha barley and 2000ha of fallow, canola and pasture.. Nick says dry conditions at season's end (late spring) can now be pretty much guaranteed, so for the farm to be profitable and sustainable, timely crop emergence under marginal conditions needs to be improved...

Yield data, collected since 2003 and from typical seasons, will be used for zoning, as will Precision SoilTech soil testing, nutrient analysis from CSBP (a division of Wesfarmers) and local knowledge, Nick says...

Get the right advice on soil tests.. When taking the results from test values to fertilizer recommendations, a Fertcare accredited adviser has the training to assess those results, in conjunction with a grower's situation including rainfall, crop, and soil type, to prepare a fertiliser plan," he said... " the results give advisers confidence in the ability of particular soil tests to predict is there is a yield response to be had, and are one of the reasons it is best to ensure your advisor is Fertcare accredited, so you know they have access to this information," Dr Norton said...
