Mention of a trade name or company in this publication does not imply endorsement of any product or company by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia... Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

Field trials on northwest NSW cracking clay soils (Vertosols) during 2011-2013 showed that surface application of urea led to ammonia volatilisation averaging 11% N loss when applied to fallow soils, and 5% N loss when applied to tillering wheat crops... Compared to urea, losses from ammonium sulfate were less, except when the soil contained >2% calcium carbonate (lime)... At the conclusion of the month, we sampled soils and plants (at in-crop and pasture sites) and measured soil nitrate and ammonium and plant total N. We did not measure N uptake into grain...

The proportion of the total seasonal water use which is used by a crop after flowering goes a long way to determining the yield and quality of the grain produced... The management plan has to cater for the variation between seasons that occurs, and requires flexibility... Growers need to investigate their soils for themselves...

Research is required to understand the question of temporal stability in patterns of spatial variation in grain protein... In the course of this project, a collaboration was established with Viterra which is interested in selective harvesting both as a means of gaining greater control over the characteristics of parcels of barley sent for malting, and also on the basis that a parcel of grain with a narrow range of variation in protein content is more highly regarded than one with a wide range... Given the poor performance of the protein sensors, these results do not disprove the concept either...

Potential yield was estimated by a modified French and Schultz approach using monthly rainfall for each site and season... Exchangeable cations were measured on prewashed samples because many subsoils were saline (EC 1:5 higher than 0.5 dS/m)... Most sites showed no yield increase in the season of application...

The main findings were that raised beds provided improved drainage and were consistently drier than conventional cropping... In 2003 wheat grew better on the conventional cultivation than the raised beds, a difference that continued through to harvest when significantly greater grain yield was measured on the conventional cultivation (6.9 t/ha)... The findings from the project provide additional knowledge of the key soil physical properties, together with crop yields, on raised beds compared with cropping on conventional cultivation and pasture in south-western Victoria...

Raised beds exemplify on-farm adaptation.. Bruce says grower confidence in the raised-bed concept was drawn from lessons learnt in Geelong at South Roxby on former agricultural land where Southern Farming Systems (SFS) established its first trial site... Wheat yields were found to increase slightly on the 20m raised beds; the plants matured unevenly, were difficult to harvest and the wider beds were more expensive to form, Bruce says...
