Crop resilience patiently built on soil health.. Stuart says on-farm trials over the past eight years show that inputs costs equate to one tonne of a two tonne per hectare crop but 2t of a 3t/ha crop... "The results show more nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are available when organic matter is introduced, and that there is more stored water in the top 10cm and no limit to the number of microbes, provided there is sufficient organic carbon," Stuart says...

Mention of a trade name or company in this publication does not imply endorsement of any product or company by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia... Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

Queensland University of Technology's Professor Peter Grace discusses strategies to help avoid nitrogen losses at a recent GRDC Grains Research Update... The loss is caused by chemical reactions on the surface of the soil, and only occurs in alkaline soils when ammonium-based fertiliser is broadcast and there is no rain to wash it into the soil... Rain is required to wash the fertiliser deeper into the soil profile, but not too much that it could cause denitrification or leaching...

Many of the farmers visited during recent 'non-wetting bus tours' are featured in a new GRDC RCSN booklet Combatting non-wetting soils ... Mr Roberts said that along with frost and weeds, non-wetting soils had been identified by the western regional panel and Regional Cropping Solutions Networks (RCSNs) as one of the top three GRDC research, development and extension (RD&E) priorities in WA... Mr Roberts said the RCSNs had recognised that non-wetting was limiting yields and that it was increasing in extent and/or severity across many of the grain growing regions of WA...

The relative effectiveness was calculated at the effectiveness of N at a depth compared with the effectiveness of N in the top-soil (0-0.2 m layer)... (A assuming Bulk density of 1.5), B % of sites measured to that depth not of the 474 cores).. The trials necessarily included whatever deep soil N the crops could access and so the responses will be weighted by that contribution from deep N. For tools such as Yield Prophet , the N at depth is usually measured and included in the model the roots for most of the soils in Yield Prophet are set to unconstrained growth...

Grazing effects did not drive yield loss in black Vertosol soils.. Tracking collars were used to create a map of Livestock Residence during the grazed period (Figure 1) and clods were collected from 10-20cm depth and scanned using CT to assess changes in porosity (Figure 2)... On reflection we believe that wetting and drying cycles in Vertosols will 'even out' even extreme management events given enough time, water and heat...

Overall, both models are acceptable for modelling soil evaporation over a range of soils and seasons provided accurate soil physical properties and starting water states are known... Overall, populations increased five times compared to before planting the summer crops, but remained below 250/kg soil (Figure 4)...

There is a risk of WSMV being spread through infected seed into new areas... We have not been able to determine an economic threshold for RGB in sorghum from these trials...
