Aeration uses fans and ducting to blow outside (ambient) air through grain... Running fans at the wrong time of the day or during unsuitable weather conditions can rapidly reheat or slowly rewet grain... During aeration drying, fans are designed to force much larger volumes of air through the grain bulk for much longer periods of time to ensure drying fronts are pushed quickly through...

Aerating grain in storage creates cool, uniform moisture conditions throughout the grain bulk... A simple device called an 'A-Flow' has been developed to measure the air-flow rate of an aeration system to check its performance... A simple calculation can then determine the volume of air (cubic metres or litres per second) the aeration fan is pushing into the grain storage...

There is only an extremely small risk of WSMV being spread through seed... Wider row spacings and higher plant populations will result in a more even and shorter flowering period and harvest, due to reduced tillering (Thomas et al 1980)... It is highly likely that plant population should be somewhere in the range 100 to 150 plants/m 2...

Aeration cooling for on-farm grain storages can improve grain quality in so many ways it's surprising to discover many grain farmers are to embrace this technology... Mr Botta says aeration cooling is about maintaining quality and controlling insect pests during harvest and storage, but growers often get aeration cooling confused with aeration drying... GRDC has a range of useful material and guides for aeration cooling of grain at www.grdc.com.au or at www.storedgrain.com.au ...

Investing in a legume crop not only offers a biological break for the control of pests and diseases, but also an investment in slow-release..
