Ravensthorpe grower Bevan Tuckett with an instruments station being used to map different soil types for their responsiveness to nitrogen treatments and their water-holding capacity... A SMP is permanently installed and works by sensing moisture in close proximity (about a 10cm radius) to the probe, recording this information and sending it via a cable to a telemetry unit and data logger... More than 50 SMPs have been installed in recent years across WA's broadacre cropping areas in a range of trials supported by GRDC, CSIRO, the Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA), advisers, grower groups and other industry stakeholders...

The objective of the national demonstration initiative is to establish a network of farms to demonstrate strategies for grain farming systems that address adaptation to climate change impacts... As a consequence: - Farmers and advisers have direct access to, and learning from, on-ground demonstration of new and existing, locally-relevant adaptations to climate change to maintain or enhance farm viability.- Rapid dissemination of meaningful and believable messages on adapting to climate change to their local communities.- Assessment of the emission implications of the demonstrated different adaptations using existing National Greenhouse Gas.. In collaboration with grower groups (including Facey, Liebe, North Mallee Farm Improvement Group and WANTFA), the Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia (DAFWA) has planned a network of farms demonstrating climate risk management strategies across the central WA wheatbelt in 2011...

The way 139.189: I'm looking at it now is that possibly we might be able to grow a winter cover crop 143.049: to make more ground cover and also have a diverse mix of a cover crop in there, and 148.4: then we'll kill that crop and then sow sunflowers into it... We're drying out 166.43: our profile; by having a winter cover crop we're growing more cover, more ground cover; 171.769: we're creating more diversity; we're getting a legume back into our system; and then we're 176.209: also able, by doing that, to grow a different crop, a summer crop, which is hopefully better 183.7: for our end goal which is soil health...
