Crop resilience patiently built on soil health.. Stuart says on-farm trials over the past eight years show that inputs costs equate to one tonne of a two tonne per hectare crop but 2t of a 3t/ha crop... "The results show more nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are available when organic matter is introduced, and that there is more stored water in the top 10cm and no limit to the number of microbes, provided there is sufficient organic carbon," Stuart says...

The farms which work on high volume mostly use conventional methods with some alternative practices used such as green manure crops, cover crops and composted material... Their conventional production system uses holistic methods to ensure sustainable agriculture, including practices like compost at 4-5 tonnes per hectare per year spread over the fields, and six-year rotations as a minimum for vegetables... Many of the businesses using conventional methods realised the importance of soil health and the need to improve their soils to maintain current production...

Figure 1: Mean yuield (t/ha) of 20 years (1983 - 2003) cropping comparing tillage systems.. When land has been cropped for many years with multiple cultivations per crop, research is showing that it can take at least three years before the advantages of no or reduced tillage show up in extra yield or more organic soils... Reduced tillage treatments - no-till, reduced-till (one to three passes per fallow of a chisel plough, blade plough and rod weeder) and stubble mulch (two to five passes per fallow of a chisel plough, blade plough and rod weeder) - convincingly out-yielded the conventional aggressive tillage system (involving two to five passes per fallow of a disc plough, scarifier and cultivator) by an average of 24 to 30 per cent per crop over the first 20 years...
