Decisions about nitrogen management for winter cereal crops can start in the months before sowing... Using this as a starting point, we can estimate the amount of N needed to grow the whole crop... Nitrogen management is more successful if decisions are made before the crop goes in. Estimates of how much N is needed can be determined through soil sampling and scenario analysis of yield potentials...

Low protein in cereal grains is indicative of poor nitrogen supply to the grain during the grain fill period... Figure 6: Relative wheat varietal nitrogen uptake performance assessed by grain nitrogen content (kg/ha) - Qld and NW NSW NVT Trials - 2011.. Soil test data from autumn 2012 suggests that many paddocks had no benefit from normal 20 - 50 kg/ha summer fallow N mineralisation due to losses from waterlogging or the >20 kg/ha residual mineral N present in the post-harvest ( Figure 2)...

The area sown to hay has grown on the back of the profitability it has added to the growers in my district... Now that I have made the point of why my growers have got into hay, I will go on to explore why, as an agronomist, I see it as an integral part of the long term overall viability of a cropping system... I have actually had problems with growers wanting to go so heavily into hay production that I think their reliance on hay was too high and had to convince them to have more grain crops and less hay!..

The benefits improve crop health and crop competitive ability against weeds and the effectiveness of pre-emergent herbicides... When used as a post-emergent product, little of the herbicide gets to the roots and the control of established weeds is often very poor... benefits arise when the weed is prevented from setting seed as there are no increases to the seedbank and, as a consequence, fewer weeds in the future...

Australian grain growers have progressively adopted a number of best management practices in order to minimise soil tillage, which is one of the main causes of soil erosion, soil compaction and soil organic matter loss... Little is known about how the increased application of herbicides affects soil biota and soil functions that sustain crop growth and ecosystem services such as crop residue turnover, water holding capacity, soil carbon storage and nutrient cycling... The project will address current knowledge gaps regarding the impact of herbicides on soil biota in all three growing regions of the Australian grains industry. The project objectives include determining the effects of different herbicides on not only soil biological communities and biodiversity, but also quantifying their effects on soil functions critical to ecosystem health...

Nutrient rates used are 40 kg P (MAP or a fluid source), 200 kg K (SOP or MOP), and 40-80 kg S (SOA or ATS), with the high application rates designed to allow impacts to be followed through an extended crop rotation... Urea was applied to either balance the N application from MAP, SOA, ATS or applied at a rate to make N non-limiting... All are intended to be evaluated over a series of crops at each site, rather than one-off snap-shots, helping us to understand the residual value of fertilizers applied in northern soils and climates...

While both leaf treatments had reduced index values compared to the untreated control, no difference was found between the two KI desiccation leaf treatments (Table 1)... For leaf desiccation treatment (Table 3), no significant differences were observed although both WSC concentration and content was higher when leaf desiccation treatments were imposed compared to the untreated control... Significant differences were found between varieties, with WSC content reducing by a greater degree for EGA Bellaroi than EGA Gregory and Sunco ...
