Tissue testing a health check-up for micronutrients.. Charlie Walker, member of the GRDC trace elements project advisory committee, says growers should consider tissue testing like a blood test for crops... Incitec Pivot technical and development manager Charlie Walker, who is a member of the GRDC trace elements project advisory committee, says tissue testing can be compared to blood testing in humans...

Enhanced efficiency fertilisers (EEFs), including slow release compounds and urease and nitrification inhibitors, show promise for improving efficiency, increasing management flexibility, and reducing N2O emissions... Enhanced efficiency fertilisers, including controlled release fertilisers and fertilisers amended with urease or nitrification inhibitors, show promise for improving nitrogen use efficiency... The main objective of the project is to assess the benefits of enhanced efficiency fertilisers, particularly nitrification inhibitors, in mitigating nitrous oxide emissions and increasing the efficiency of nitrogen fertilisers for a range of agricultural industries, including cropping (Victoria and NSW), sugarcane (Queensland) and dairy (Victoria), under different climatic conditions that are found across Australia...

Disc popularity raises need for buyer homework.. Legal and machinery experts are urging grain growers to carefully research the range of disc seeders on the market to make sure the equipment they buy is suitable for their situation... Mr Sulman suggests asking suppliers: for written evidence outlining research data specific to the machine being purchased to assess its suitability for the farming system, soil type and moisture profile; or to sow a trial, or multiple trials, under different seasonal conditions on-farm; or to lease the machine so it can be tested for performance...

Table 1 Percentage responses citing experience with specific disc seeder limitations.. The trend towards greater adoption of disc opener planter continues to increase as Australian farmers seek more flexibility and robustness from their farming systems... 1. Coulter disc openers - these vertical discs running in the plane parallel to the direction of travel are often used with tyne openers and double disc openers where the coulter is used primarily to prepare the way for seed placement by either cutting residue, doing some soil disturbance (the amount depending on whether it is smooth, bubbled, ripple or wavy, its operating depth and peripheral rotation speed) and/or applying (liquid) fertiliser...

Salinity affects plant growth through impacts on plant water relations... We expect that the yields of cultivars in the water-limited environment will be highly correlated with the yields on the saltland site at Ballidu, but the yields in the non water-limited environment will not be correlated with the yields in either the water-limited or the saltland environment... Drought is impacting on the productivity of cereals in the drier parts of the wheatbelt and farmers need access to the best cereal cultivars for particular soils, timely "soil type specific" advice on how to respond to dry seasons, and advice about whether certain kinds of soils of low productivity should be withdrawn altogether from cereal production...

Sowing opportunities were assessed for each day in the sowing season based on PASW% of seedbed [0-100mm depth] or topsoil [0-200mm depth]... Seedling performance was assessed for each sowing opportunity by counting the days between germination (dry sown) or sowing (moist sown) and July 19 when seedlings were exposed to lethal or disabling topsoil [0-200mm] conditions ( Table 1 )... In 50% of years the first opportunity occurs before early May and 10 days of sowing will have been achieved by early June ( Table 3 )...

Long-term trial shows the benefits of soil carbon.. Western Australian researchers and grower groups are investigating the benefits and pitfalls of a range of strategies to boost soil organic carbon (SOC) across the state's cropping areas... Dr Hoyle says the long-term trials indicate that by increasing organic matter inputs, retaining stubble, minimising soil disturbance and optimising plant productivity, the loss of SOC from cropping systems can be slowed or SOC can slowly increase (but this is likely to occur over many decades)...
