Large-scale field experiments on sandy and clay soils at Merredin, Nungarin, Tammin, Kellerberin and Corrigin shires (Western Australia) were conducted by Dr M A Hamza (in collaboration with growers) to find the optimum combination(s) of ripping depth and tine spacing for maximum yield... The major finding was that the depth of ripping could be reduced to 30cm provided that tine spacing was no wider than 30cm... A supplementary outcome was addressed, facilitated by acquisition of a shallow leading tine (SLT) ripper donated by AGROWPLOW and an air-seeder bin funded by GRDC...

Reduced tillage treatments - no-till, reduced-till (one to three passes per fallow of a chisel plough, blade plough and rod weeder) and stubble mulch (two to five passes per fallow of a chisel plough, blade plough and rod weeder) - convincingly out-yielded the conventional aggressive tillage system (involving two to five passes per fallow of a disc plough, scarifier and cultivator) by an average of 24 to 30 per cent per crop over the first 20 years...

Wheat crops on the deep ripped plots have already grown roots and accessed water to a depth of 40cm below the soil surface - a much deeper level compared with the unripped plots... "In coming weeks, roots in the ripped plots may access soil water below 40cm and these crops could produce yields up to 0.5 tonnes per hectare greater than the crops on the untreated plots," CSIRO researcher Phil Ward said... "During winter, there was virtually no water uptake at 20 to 40cm in the untreated soils, but there was significant water uptake and root growth at this depth in the ripped plots," Dr Ward said...

As a general rule, a machine with a 10-tonne axle weight causes crop-constraining soil compaction to a depth of 30 centimetres...
