"Now is the time - before harvest - to record where slugs have been present this year, regardless of whether they caused damage, as it can take more than one season for slugs to reach damaging levels in a paddock... "Discussed at all meetings was the need for alternative controls for slugs in WA, as burning and tillage only controls the reticulated slug," GRDC RCSN coordinator Julianne Hill said... GRDC supported surveys conducted by DAFWA have found that most slugs in WA crops are the black keeled slug or the reticulated slug...

Some rural supply stores are reported to have sold more slug bait than glyphosate, highlighting just how much of an issue slugs have become... IPM Technologies' Dr Paul Horne says the two slug species in south-east Australia that are the perpetrators of much HRZ crop damage are the black-keeled slug ( Milax gagates ) - usually found in drier areas - and the grey field slug ( Deroceras reticulatum ), found in wetter areas... "Slugs seem to be getting worse nearly every year, but we're getting better at managing them too," Troy says. "..

slugs are a major pest of crops globally, and have emerged as a serious pest for australian grain growers in recent decades... Slugs will eat all parts of a crop plant seedlings are the most vulnerable and this is the time when major economic losses can occur... A one-year 'fast-track project' has been developed to evaluate the impact of a range of slug control practices to help growers avoid losses.. "The purpose to the project is that we can show farmers there is a way to deal with slugs and it's not by skimping on bait and putting it out too late," Dr Horne says... Mr Drum says while the number of slugs is predicted to be lower this season, he is still expecting to see plenty in crops...

With sowing either underway or fast-approaching following widespread rain in early April, growers in the high rainfall zone (HRZ) of south-eastern Australia are being reminded to put in place slug control practices for the 2015 season... Monitoring of slugs by South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) researchers and time-lapse cameras suggest some slugs are starting to emerge from summer refuges, especially the surface active species... A key control option for growers to consider is rolling post-sowing, pre-emergence to help seedling establishment, limit soil clods that provide slug habitat and make it more difficult for slugs to find germinating seed...
