Small pointed snails prefer conditions where rainfall is > 500mm, with all four pest snail species preferring seasons with wet autumns and springs... The main pest species of slugs are the black keeled and grey field slug the brown field slug also became a serious pest and is suited to warmer conditions... The trial supports previous research recommending the application of baits must be immediately after sowing to protect emerging seedlings...

Some rural supply stores are reported to have sold more slug bait than glyphosate, highlighting just how much of an issue slugs have become... IPM Technologies' Dr Paul Horne says the two slug species in south-east Australia that are the perpetrators of much HRZ crop damage are the black-keeled slug ( Milax gagates ) - usually found in drier areas - and the grey field slug ( Deroceras reticulatum ), found in wetter areas... "Slugs seem to be getting worse nearly every year, but we're getting better at managing them too," Troy says. "..

The evaluation of slug management strategies - a "fast track project" instigated by the GRDC's Regional Cropping Solutions Network in the HRZ - has been conducted by Southern Farming Systems in the Western District of Victoria... SFS chief executive officer Jon Midwood said the project aimed to demonstrate and evaluate a range of management strategies that could effectively reduce slug damage to crops at emergence and during establishment... Mr Midwood said the project involved three trial and demonstration sites at Inverleigh, Hamilton and Skipton and that treatments included in the trials initially aimed to include a range of cultural practices and chemical options (baits), but with the very dry summer of 2012-13, some of the cultural controls became impractical...

slugs are a major pest of crops globally, and have emerged as a serious pest for australian grain growers in recent decades... Slugs will eat all parts of a crop plant seedlings are the most vulnerable and this is the time when major economic losses can occur... Current research cultivation is effective in reducing slug is investigating this further, but preliminary numbers as it destroys their habitat results suggest that a minimum of 250,000 this is not an option in zero-till operations bait points per hectare may be required...

Population dynamics of slugs and predation by native beetles were investigated with a view to facilitating integrated control of establishment pests in southern Australian canola... Control of slugs via biological control agents requires management changes including decreased tillage, reduced insecticide usage and provision of native grasslands as a refuge for beetles (beetle banks)... The primary aim of this study was to develop the biological component of an integrated approach to the control of slugs in broadacre crops of canola ( Brassica napus L. ssp...

Slugs best beaten by baiting at sowing.. The planter was mounted with a bait applicator to apply slug bait in a 10-centimetre band directly above the row at seeding... To monitor slug numbers in spring and then at pre-sowing, Dr Nash says it is easier for growers to put down some cheap bait, leave it overnight and come back the following day to see how many slugs were killed, rather than using surface refuges such as tiles...
