Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) entomologist Svetlana Micic, who helped compile the Hot Topic, said slugs were usually found on heavy soils and wet areas... In response to renewed slug pressures in HRZ after the mid to late 2000's drought period a survey has been initiated to determine the extent of problems and validate factors likely to lead to increased chances of crop losses due to slugs at establishment (Table 2)... The trial supports previous research recommending the application of baits immediately after sowing to protect emerging seedlings... Bait does kill juveniles that are active, but invasion from the soil and new hatchlings quickly return population levels to greater than the initial population the common observation baits select for younger populations...

Small pointed snails prefer conditions where rainfall is > 500mm, with all four pest snail species preferring seasons with wet autumns and springs... The season (2012) provides an example of snails and slugs not being limited by dry summer and autumn conditions... The main pest species of slugs are black keeled and grey field slug the brown field slug has also been recorded in high numbers this season (>30 m2)...
