1. Understand the risk for resistance to Sakura and Boxer Gold to evolve in annual ryegrass populations 2... Quantify resistance levels after a few cycles of recurrent selection at below-label rates 3... Results indicate that the resistance level to Boxer Gold further increased in the progeny after one cycle of Boxer Gold selection (Table 2)...

The results of the experiments have given Jeff the confidence to realise that he does have a viable, cost-effective alternative knockdown herbicide to glyphosate... Double knockdown (T 2.2b, page 128) Weather permitting, a double knockdown is implemented on resistant ryegrass paddocks prior to sowing using two non-selective herbicides (glyphosate followed by paraquat + diquat or paraquat, the choice being dependent upon the range of weeds present)... Helpful advice The Grays still enjoy the challenges and can see that they have made enough progress to feel they are being successful in managing a serious annual ryegrass problem...

AHRI researcher Mechelle Owen said that although other studies had already found evidence of a correlation between dormancy and resistance in annual ryegrass, the AHRI research was the first large scale study to demonstrate the link... "For each population, initial dormancy and change in dormancy over a six-month period were measured, and the resistance status of seedlings to four herbicides was assessed," Ms Owen said... "Intensive cropping programs are likely to select for increased dormancy when knockdown herbicides kill off the proportion of seed which is able to germinate with the opening rains, leaving the more dormant proportion of the population to germinate later in the season, usually in the crop," she said...

The benefits improve crop health and crop competitive ability against weeds and the effectiveness of pre-emergent herbicides... When used as a post-emergent product, little of the herbicide gets to the roots and the control of established weeds is often very poor... benefits arise when the weed is prevented from setting seed as there are no increases to the seedbank and, as a consequence, fewer weeds in the future...

The study is about the management of weeds in those HTGM crops that have been grown overseas... Reduced tillage/no-till/zero-till Conventional agricultural practice involved cultivation prior to sowing of a crop or pasture to kill weeds and prepare the seed bed... but only for a while" Phil Stahlman Weed scientist Kansas State University Going to a total RR system in the corn-soybean rotation has, I believe, made farmers lazy with many just using glyphosate for weed control...

Professor Powles said that under this technology, which is in the early stages of development, a mirror copy is made of a weed's DNA in which targeted genes can be turned on or off... "Whether or not BioDirect@" as a herbicide will come to commercial fruition is very difficult for me to judge, but I hope fervently that it does because we need all the tools we can muster to battle weeds and herbicide resistance," he said... Professor Powles said there was no doubt that the evolution of herbicide resistant weeds was a major threat to global food production, which needed to be able to feed nine billion people in coming decades...

The cross resistance profile to pre-emergence herbicides has been examined in a multi-resistant population of annual ryegrass after pyroxasulfone recurrent selection... Recurrent selection with pyroxasulfone at below-label doses has resulted in pyroxasulfone resistance and cross-resistance to prosulfocarb and triallate... We suggest that herbicide rotation at the full label rate of prosulfocarb, pyroxasulfone, triallate and trifluralin in conjunction with weed seed control at harvest is currently the most sustainable solution for pre-emergence herbicide control of annual ryegrass in cereals...

Rotation of trifluralin, Sakura and Boxer Gold appears to be the most effective measure to delay the evolution of resistance to these herbicides... Results indicate that the resistance level to Boxer Gold further increased in the progeny after one cycle of Boxer Gold selection (Table 2)...

# - no reference in IWM manual, so estimate was made by author of this paper... The inclusion of Mataven in the list of herbicides is essential because it can be applied late post-emergence in wheat crops to prevent wild oat seed set and is a Group Z herbicide - could be a vital tool in herbicide resistance management - but it has a history of cross resistance with Group A...
