Higher grain yields were achieved and infection levels of blackleg reduced when commercial hybrid seed was used... Yeruga Crop Research's Trent Potter says the aim was to measure the effect of retaining hybrid sowing seed on plant vigour, internal blackleg infection, oil content and grain yield, compared with the original commercial hybrid bought from a seed supplier... Hybrid seed assessed included Conventional (Hyola 50 at all sites and Taurus at Bool Lagoon), Clearfield (45Y77, 45Y82, 46Y83 and Hyola 575CL) and triazine-tolerant (CB Tumby HT and CB Jardee HT)...

Canola is gaining favour among graingrowers north of Dubbo, NSW as a winter crop... Aphids are the main focus of the research work as these are regularly occuring pests of northern grain crops and cause angst among northern growers, Dr Miles says... "You can get single racemes that have early infestation and lots of aphids which stop that raceme flowering and setting pods or you can have every raceme on the plant with just a few aphids that seem to just slow down the flowering or stop the last few flowers and pods from setting."..

In trials carried out in four states over four years using a Pythium-selective seed dressing at greater concentrations than commercial products, yield increases of two to 12 per cent were recorded in cereals, five to 25 per cent in canola and five to 35 per cent in pulses... The yield improvements were achieved with only partial disease control...
