Dr Anthony Biddle of Processors and Growers Research Organisation, Peterborough, UK, speaking at the GRDC supported 12th International Lupin Conference in Fremantle, WA, told delegates there were many constraints to UK grain lupin production. ".. Dr Biddle indicated problem weeds include brassicas and black bindweed, but herbicide options for weed control were limited to chemicals approved for use in beans and peas... He said lupins have a small niche market in the UK, mainly for on-farm livestock feeding and the total area sown to lupins is a mere 6000 hectares...

Weeds specialist Dr Ford Baldwin of Practical Weed Consultants in the US thought Roundup Ready soybeans were a miracle when they became available in 1995: "The technology was superior to anything we had seen," he said... Dr Baldwin said that if you look at the technology now in the US, resistance is found within all the key weed species, meaning some growers have had to resort to hand-weeding and tillage to deal with tolerant plants... He said, many southern US growers are turning to glufosinate (Group N herbicides, such as Basta and Liberty ) to achieve broad-spectrum weed control...

Highlighting the true cost of in-crop weeds.. A new study shows in-crop weeds are an ongoing challenge for Australian grain growers, with overall costs estimated at $3.3 billion annually in terms of lost yield and management methods... Results from the study, available in a report entitled Impact of Weeds on Australian Grain Production , also show growers are mostly keeping in-crop weeds at low densities, despite the increasing presence of herbicide resistance...

Sowthistle is the newest problem weed to show signs of glyphosate resistance in the north... "Individual plants within the suspect populations survived the glyphosate much better than they should have and within two or three weeks some plants were starting to regenerate again," Mr Cook said... "More work is being done to determine whether it is resistance, and if so what level, but it is a timely reminder to maintain diversity when undertaking weed control and to closely monitor weeds after sprays to detect and control survivors," Mr Cook said...

BROME GRASS CONTROL SUPPORT: Grain growers challenged with the task of controlling the problematic brome grass are being provided with a new resource to support their weed management strategies... GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair David Shannon says brome grass competing early in wheat at a density of 100 plants per square metre can reduce yields by as much as 30 to 50 per cent. ".. The well-adapted weed has proliferated in the past decade, due to the absence of effective herbicides for its control in cereals, intensification of cropping systems, especially wheat on wheat, and the introduction of conservation tillage," Mr Shannon said. "..

Sowthistle uses stored soil water during fallows and interferes with crop harvest, adding green matter to harvested grain... Sowthistle plants are erect and fleshy with hollow, smooth stems that exude milky latex when damaged... Sowthistle plants can be either present as a rosette or upright in their growth form...
