Tighter fallow management gives wheat best chance.. Photo of two men inspecting wheat.. While June was wet, with 100mm of rain recorded, July and August turned dry, and Graham says the crop appeared to "turn blue", or die, because of a lack of moisture...

Narrow windrow burning is a simple, low cost way of destroying weed seeds after harvest by placing crop residue in a narrow windrow during harvest and then burning it... Maurie Street, chief executive officer of the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) funded grower solution group Grain Orana Alliance (GOA) says lighter yielding cereal crops or break crops such as chickpeas are ideal crops for those growers looking to initiate windrow burning... "Windrow burning can be an intimidating idea, but I believe chickpea harvest is an opportunity not to be missed," Mr Street said "It is the least competitive crop in terms of competiveness with weeds and has limited weed control options so it is a crop you will potentially see more weed escapes in...

Previous research in Western Australia (DAW494, DAW618, DAW00027 and DAW00134) has identified differences in herbicide tolerance amongst varieties of all crops and yield losses of more than 10% have been recorded in trials... While small reductions in yield may be acceptable if weeds are strongly competing with the crop, yield reductions greater than 10% due to herbicide phytotoxicity may be as significant as weeds in limiting crop returns... Herbicides can have off-target effects on crops and this can vary between cultivars, so tolerance testing is required...

The manual offers an overview of FTR and its biology as well as practical advice on all aspects of FTR management including control tactics, post-emergent and residual herbicide options, the use of crop rotations, advice on chemical groups to include in a management program and implementation of an effective integrated control strategy... The manual's recommendations are based on the latest FTR research findings on herbicide efficacy, effects of strategic tillage on seed placement in the soil profile, seed bank viability at differing burial depths, effect of different implements on FTR emergence and the impact of crop rotation in FTR management... Growers are urged to ensure that grain retained for crop seed this harvest is properly cleaned, with research showing they tend to severely under-estimate weed seed contamination... "The research, supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), confirmed that many farmers unknowingly introduce substantial levels of weed and volunteer crop seeds into their farming systems at seeding time, even when crop seed has been cleaned," AHRI senior researcher Mechelle Owen said... "Furthermore, the 2010 results showed that many of these weed seed populations are resistant to a range of commonly used post-emergent herbicides, indicating that farmers are unknowingly seeding herbicide-resistant weed seeds directly into their paddocks...

Strategic tillage puts the pressure back on weeds.. The planting technology combines the functionality of a harrow for breaking up soil clods, removing weeds and covering seed on tilled paddocks, with that of press wheels used to compact the soil over seed in furrows... Using the RFM Ag press harrows to plant Kyabra chickpeas and Kennedy wheat into tilled soil this winter grains season, Darren says they have also cut downtime spent on machinery at seeding...

Land-use surveys gauge biosecurity risks.. Burning weed seeds in windrows after harvest is an effective way of reducing the weed burden... The dynamic nature of farming means that growers are always tweaking the enterprise mix, trying new crops, and perhaps adding or removing livestock...

DAF is seeking permission from growers and land managers to enter properties to collect weed seeds, and will conduct two surveys in Queensland coinciding with winter and summer grain and legume harvests... Weeds targeted in the survey include feathertop Rhodes grass, fleabane, sowthistle, barnyard grass, windmill grass, liverseed grass, annual ryegrass wild oat and Brassica species if present... In Queensland, growers will be contacted prior to paddock visits with a date and an estimated time of visit, and both QDAF and CSU personnel will ensure extra care is taken to make sure boots and clothing are free from weed seeds before entering property...
