In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

Modern farming systems enjoy a greater range of tools to aid in decision making during the growing season... There are a range of products and services to help with in-season decision making: simple historic rainfall and temperature deciles, such as Rainmain or CliMate; seasonal forecasting, such as SOI, IOD and ENSO; short term weather forecasts (a large range of websites and apps available); yield prediction tools and newsletters, such as Yield Prophet, Hart Beat, The Break; and soil moisture probes... Further to the products, growers also have the ability to make variable rate input decisions based on paddock spatial variation through crop sensors mounted on tractors, satellite photos or other images collected from planes or UAVs and drones...

At a recent Grain and Graze farmer group discussion held at Ardrossan a Case Study farm was used to assess the impact of some strategic decisions such as the purchase versus lease of land... The same approach is used in this paper... The spread of results will increase as the greater number of paddocks is swapped opportunistically from a low gross margin to a higher gross margin crop...

In Western Australia, late but steady rain turned a frightening start into a bumper season, particularly for wheat and canola... The above photograph by Evan Collis was taken on the 4000-hectare Dowerin property of Andrew Todd, who says 2013 began with the driest start on record for his area 170 kilometres north-east of Perth... In terms of lessons to take into 2014, Andrew says the season proved once again that "time of sowing is king"...

Long-season canolas reshape seasonal management.. Bruce McLean inspects his long-season canola, which was sown in December last year and grazed over summer before being locked up for harvest in June... I've heard through trial results in Victoria's Western District that good root establishment with this type of canola is the main yield driver, and that's what we've got with our crop," he says...

Crop insect pest and disease experts, supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), advise that strategies put in place now will help to discourage aphid population build-up and the potential for crop diseases, especially beet western yellows virus (BWYV), during the growing season... Entomologist Paul Umina of cesar says widespread infestations of green peach aphid (GPA) contributed to the 2014 outbreak of BWYV, which is transferred into canola crops by aphids carrying the virus... SARDI plant pathologist Jenny Davidson said this funding was and will be used in a number of areas, including forensic analysis of canola paddocks; communication to growers and advisers (assisted in SA with an additional $40,000 in emergency funding provided by SAGIT); and preliminary assessment of virus levels in different canola varieties to identify if there are any useful levels of resistance to BWYV for future sowing recommendations...

Seasonal climate forecasts are part of assessing future risks, Paul Carberry from NSW DPI after many years of talking with farmers about seasonal climate forecasts preferred to call them seasonal risk assessments... Another challenge for climate change projections is that some who want urgent action on reducing greenhouse emissions see uncertainty as an unnecessary distraction while others who are unconvinced about the need to change use the uncertainty as part of their case... The presentation will discuss some of the ways that have been used with farmers in as part of the DAFF project 's Farming Future using the notion of shifts in deciles to talk through the issue of risk management in a variable and changing climate...
