" Date: 09.12.2013 'Perfect storm' sparks sclerotinia outbreak in canola crops.. " , crops have flowered very early this year due to the mild winter temperatures and this has contributed to the levels of disease we observed," said Mr Lindbeck, who is based at the Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute where he leads Grains Research and Development Corporation-funded research on the management of pulse and oilseed diseases in southern NSW... Mr Lindbeck said that in addition to sclerotinia being an airborne disease, the sclerotinia stem rot pathogen produced hard, black, survival bodies on infected plant tissue called sclerotia which enabled the fungus to survive for up to 10 years in the field...

National canola Sclerotinia surveys have found stem infection levels above 60 per cent in some paddocks in conducive seasons... "But the disease is highly weather sensitive and the crop response will change each year, depending on how the season unfolds - particularly in relation to spring rainfall and timing of spore release," she said... Remotely sensed data from satellite, drones or real time NDVI sensors might allow growers to measure crop biomass and vary fungicidal applications ...

Monitoring canola crops for blackleg and sclerotinia is essential for making informed decisions about managing these diseases.. The Blackleg Management Guide fact sheet available on the GRDC website describes how to monitor crops and lists all the management practices available.. Dr Lindbeck says foliar fungicides need to be considered in districts at high risk of disease development (areas where disease frequently occurs and where canola has a long flowering period and there is reliable spring rainfall)...

Keep an eye on your canola for diseases in 2015.. We want growers to have a fungicide management plan in place for when new actives come onto the market and we are also encouraging growers to change varieties based on resistance groups... Dr Marcroft says at the end of the season, growers should pull some canola plants out of the ground and cut the stem open to see if they have blackleg symptoms...
