" Delivery of Technical Workshops to Enhance Industry Knowledge - Crop Growth Researcher's Name: NigelWilhelm Organisation: Low Rainfall Collaboration Project, through Central West FS group as the contracting body Email: Nigel... A thorough understanding of key processes underlying plant growth and water uptake is essential in order to better manage the impact of various influences on crop growth, such as nutrition, disease, variety, soil moisture, time of seeding, likely end use outcomes (feed vs hay vs grain) and harvest conditions... Single day workshops will be held with each of five low rainfall farming systems groups across south eastern Australia...

Catalogue: GRDC Final Reports
Current farming systems expose farmers to heavy losses during good seasons when the risk of crop failure is low and returns could be maximised by additional levels of N... The SOI phases, originally developed in Queensland, can be used to identify a set of past years of similar climatic characteristics (analogue years) to the present season... Seasonal climate forecasting is a crucial tool for growers to micro-adjust and governments to macro-adjust economic strategies and policies to reduce impacts on private, estate and national economic objectives...

Plant breeders have made great progress in improving disease resistance but much less progress improving the adaptation of wheat to drought and high temperature... There is a need to establish better methods for assessing drought and heat tolerance under field conditions to support Australian wheat breeding... The establishment of a managed environment facility (MEF) in the field at Narrabri provides a means of making accurate, repeatable and relevant measurements of drought and heat response in wheat...

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) come in a range of forms and sizes and these can have different uses.. The most appropriate roles for UAVs in broadacre cropping are still being determined.. According to experienced UAV pilot Martin Peters, from FarmingIT, there are a few certainties with UAVs: if licensing is required it is time-consuming and expensive; landings are nerve-racking; birds of prey can be a problem; you will never have as much computing power for data analysis as you want; and every day someone comes up with a new idea of how a UAV can be used for agriculture...

Catalogue: Nuffield Scholar Reports
I initially applied to Nuffield as a direct result of moving between two different farms and finding that I had to re-apply all my knowledge to areas that were initially simple to me... The key findings suggest that northern Australia is unique and quite different to most other parts of the world when this topic is examined... Partly because of this we tend to concentrate on farming the more fertile heavier clay based soils that hold moisture better, and then machine trafficability becomes an issue during the wet periods...
