The GRDC capacity building team has been working on programs to: educate teachers and career advisers about opportunities in the grain industry, given their role as key influencers over student career decision-making; target tertiary students who are already likely to study science as a career and outline to them the opportunities in agricultural and plant science as a specialty field; and promote the science behind grain production to secondary-school students to showcase the broad range of careers and opportunities available...

"The grains industry is a dynamic and progressive sector for young people to be involved in so the GRDC is allocating funds to help guide and support tertiary students across Australia as they strive to become the next generation of agronomists, growers and grains industry personnel," said Mr Pengilley, who recently met with the scholarship recipients when the GRDC Board visited Longerenong College as part of a tour of western Victoria... As a farmer on the Liverpool Plains in New South Wales, Angus Duddy is only too aware of current tensions between farming and mining interests... "Not just coexist, but whether mining operations might present landholders with opportunities to tap into alternative energy sources and recycled water that will benefit their production," he said... "I'm aware that I might find that these large mining projects do not benefit agricultural businesses, in which case I believe landholders and managers need to understand the risks they present and how these can be managed," he said...
