Influence of fungicide rate (mean of fungicide products - four site mean) Stem rust control assessed over the four trial sites revealed that using high rates was essential for the control of the disease, even if the fungicide had been applied prophylactically (before infection was visible in the crop)... Influence of cultivar resistance and fungicide application (Prosaro ) on yield and stem rust severity measured on the flag sheath 18 days after fungicide application at early dough (GS82) and assessed at mid dough - physiological maturity (GS85-90) - Bairnsdale, Gippsland, Victoria, 2010... The yield potential for the crop with no nitrogen applied is estimated at GS30 from the results of numerous of trials conducted in that region where NDVI at GS30 is divided by the number of growing degree days (GDD) greater than 0 C since planting, referred to as the INSEY units (in season estimate of yield)...

In summary VSAP is: A summary of the key reasons for the release of the new variety, including strengths and weaknesses, and how the new variety should be managed relative to current common varieties... Overall, Total N fixed was strongly linked to dry matter production and rainfall... Overall, early removal is still likely to be the best option on heavy clay soils...

` The aim is to do this across all rainfall zones (high, medium and low), using both major cereal grains grown in WA (wheat and barley). The accepted definition of canopy management is 'managing the green surface area of the crop canopy in order to optimise profitability'... To date in WA, there has been some canopy management work undertaken in the high rainfall zones, but there has been no research done in the medium to low rainfall zones... ConsultAg wish to undertake a 3 year research project to validate, and if worthy, integrate the principles of canopy management into the Western Australian cropping system...

Evidence of sclerotinia in canola is starting to emerge in the northern wheatbelt on the back of recent cooler moist conditions and the closing over of crop canopies... The window for effective preventative fungicide control of this disease in the region has closed for the bulk of crops - or is rapidly closing - and it is advisable to monitor canola closely for signs of infection... Currently registered fungicides for management of sclerotinia in canola include Prosaro , Iprodione (eg. Rovral Liquid) and Procymidone (eg. Sumisclex , Fortress )...

The project has underpinned a significant shift in the approach to cereal, pulse and canola production across the cropping areas of South Australia... Growers have changed their approach from a "recipe - high input" farming practice to a more tactile risk management approach with the skills gained from principles demonstrated throughout the project... The project has enabled growers to confidently apply later nitrogen to manage seasonal risk and crop canopies with little or no risk of decreased yields in drier than average seasons...

Validations on plot trials produced an R 2 of 0.97 between simulated and measured plant N (g N m -2 )... Fitzgerald et al. 2010 reported a correlation with an R 2 = 0.97 between predicted and measured total plant N (g N m -2 ) based on relating the CCCI to the Canopy Nitrogen Index (CNI) - an index that relates biomass to plant N. This relationship was validated with additional plot level data from Australia and Italy, resulting in an R 2 of 0.97 of predicted with measured plant N (g N m -2 ) and an RMSE of 0.2 g N m -2 as reported in Cammarano et al. 2011b... In the short term, there is a need for a workshop to fully identify the knowledge gaps, and develop a plan for research leading to new capabilities and deliverables to growers and consultants...
