Widespread frosts in Western Australia in 1998 and 2005 caused wheat yield losses of 500,000 and 700,000 tonnes respectively, while drought, salinity, disease and nutrient issues are ongoing challenges for the State's cereal growers... The GRDC also has equity investments in three of the commercial wheat breeding companies in Australia... Minimise risk of virus by retaining stubble, planting on time and at optimal rate, controlling weeds and ensuring adequate plant nutrition.. These results and a recent report of a closely related polerovirus from Tasmania suggest that it has a very wide geographical range... Soil tests in one 2012 salt affected crop of PBA HatTrick south of Walgett showed chloride levels of 1,770 mg/kg (1:5 H2O) and EC se of 9.8 dS/m at 15-60cm...

Finally to the numerous farmers, business people and researchers I met around the world that were also very generous with their time and knowledge, thank you... It is widely regarded that cactus is high yielding, highly palatable and a readily available source of carbohydrates but lacks crude protein and crude fibre to get the best performance out of cactus it needs to be supplemented with a cheap source of fibre and protein (Nefzaoui, Salem, Salem, 2000, p512 - 516)... Messages obtained from farmers in a GRDC supported study on 27 farms in the Wallatin and O'Brien catchments 200 kilometres east of Perth are relevant to a large portion of WA's wheatbelt... The study recommended demonstration approaches to salinity management to enable farmers to draw objective conclusions about cost-effectiveness and critical success factors... The study concluded that CDI-type approaches can overcome knowledge constraints in managing salinity by fostering social learning, offering a structured process of trialling options so costs and benefits can be identified and avoiding past costly mistakes and "learning failures"...

Deep drains are an engineering solution to removing saline water from farmland... When the Wallatin Wildlife and Landcare group, east of Kellerberrin, had the opportunity to apply for funding to tackle salinity over two whole catchments in 2003, it jumped at the chance... Fifteen demonstration projects were set up and landholders had the opportunity to co-invest in further projects of their choice, based on technical reviews, available data and on-farm site visits by a technical team with natural resource management, hydrology, plant, and water management expertise...
