Finally to the numerous farmers, business people and researchers I met around the world that were also very generous with their time and knowledge, thank you... It is widely regarded that cactus is high yielding, highly palatable and a readily available source of carbohydrates but lacks crude protein and crude fibre to get the best performance out of cactus it needs to be supplemented with a cheap source of fibre and protein (Nefzaoui, Salem, Salem, 2000, p512 - 516)... Develop a farming operation where a normal budget would rely on less than 50% of traditional farming system to generate the income reducing exposure to financial risk in droughts...

Lorinda Hunt, development officer at DAFWA"s Three Springs office, says that when the trials began there was no agronomic data on controlling the weed, so the trials were entering unknown territory... Ms Hunt says that historically, growers considered that salt levels were only ever likely to worsen, so once salt started to encroach on their land they effectively locked up those paddocks and stopped cropping... Ms Hunt says that trials in 2004 showed that if ice plant is controlled on mildly saline land, a good clover and ryegrass pasture can be established...

On-row seeding enhanced P and K concentrations of wheat plants at early growth stages up to flowering, relative to between-row seeding, when the respective soil-test P and K concentrations were low and/or when MAP fertiliser was not banded at seeding... Mean wheat yields (i.e. average of 2 or 3 MAP fertiliser rates ranging from 0 to 50 or 80 kg ha -1) were: (a) 11-14 per cent lower with on-row seeding at Binnu (where wheat followed wheat in 25 cm rows); (b) 7 per cent higher with on-row seeding at Mullewa (where wheat followed barley in 30 cm rows); and (c) not different at Pindar (where wheat followed wheat in 30 cm rows)... Where dryland salinity threatens the productivity of agricultural land there is a need for farmers to formulate considered responses... From the areas identified by farmers we noticed that mid and upper slope farmers have just as much area of concern (often brackish hillside seeps) and recent outbreaks on their farms as valley floor farmers... There is a need for farmers and catchment groups to invest greater effort in risk assessment and to link the need to know to the risk at given sites...

Messages obtained from farmers in a GRDC supported study on 27 farms in the Wallatin and O'Brien catchments 200 kilometres east of Perth are relevant to a large portion of WA's wheatbelt... The study recommended demonstration approaches to salinity management to enable farmers to draw objective conclusions about cost-effectiveness and critical success factors... The study concluded that CDI-type approaches can overcome knowledge constraints in managing salinity by fostering social learning, offering a structured process of trialling options so costs and benefits can be identified and avoiding past costly mistakes and "learning failures"...
