In order to draw better conclusions from the mail survey and also to monitor the problematic weeds in that agro-ecological zone, a field survey of weeds in wheat and canola crops was conducted in October and November 2003... In a survey of weeds in 1998 by the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Weed Management Systems and the mail survey in 2001 (UM141) farmers in higher rainfall regions of Victoria nominated annual ryegrass to be the most difficult weed to control... Both this survey and the CRC survey showed cape weed as moderately difficult to control...

Validations on plot trials produced an R 2 of 0.97 between simulated and measured plant N (g N m -2 )... Fitzgerald et al. 2010 reported a correlation with an R 2 = 0.97 between predicted and measured total plant N (g N m -2 ) based on relating the CCCI to the Canopy Nitrogen Index (CNI) - an index that relates biomass to plant N. This relationship was validated with additional plot level data from Australia and Italy, resulting in an R 2 of 0.97 of predicted with measured plant N (g N m -2 ) and an RMSE of 0.2 g N m -2 as reported in Cammarano et al. 2011b... In the short term, there is a need for a workshop to fully identify the knowledge gaps, and develop a plan for research leading to new capabilities and deliverables to growers and consultants...

The project will deliver validated indices derived from remote sensing that can spatially measure and map canopy-level crop nitrogen (N) status within rainfed wheat systems... Remote sensing (spectral and thermal) combined with crop models can provide maps showing chronic and acute water stress areas that can guide N management strategies within the context of potential for response to targeted N inputs... Results from trials in Australia and Italy show ability to relate remote sensing measurements at the plot scale to plant N, based on remote sensing of the canopy and biomass measurements...

The benefits improve crop health and crop competitive ability against weeds and the effectiveness of pre-emergent herbicides... When used as a post-emergent product, little of the herbicide gets to the roots and the control of established weeds is often very poor... benefits arise when the weed is prevented from setting seed as there are no increases to the seedbank and, as a consequence, fewer weeds in the future...

H. marinum is widely referred to as sea barley grass around the world, and H. hystrixis known as Mediterranean barley grass... Conditions that favour germination and establishment The seed of common sowthistle can germinate at temperatures in the range 5 C to 35 C. Germination is ultimately determined by moisture availability, as a moist environment is preferred... There is a high proportion of seedling emergence from shallow seed sources, whereas more deeply buried seeds remain dormant and long-lived with a half life estimated at 10 years...
