It was proposed that DRB be isolated and evaluated against ARG. Successful organisms were then to be applied in high numbers and assessed in field situations... Until the mode of action of these bacteria is clearly defined and/or a rapid isolation and assessment protocol (perhaps with the aid of gene technology) identified, this project needs to be shelved... It was proposed that DRB be isolated and evaluated for annual ryegrass - with the aim of inhibiting seed set and subsequent annual ryegrass toxicity reduction...

KEYMESSAGES While resistance in annual ryegrass is common throughout the wheatbelt, resistance to some herbicides like glyphosate or paraquat/diquat is still rare in WA... Safeguard ryegrass could be used to increase the density of ryegrass in the following year, as it is susceptible to glyphosate (and resistant to ARGT)... Most of the pollen was produced by the resistant plants in the vineyard, and there was a very high chance of susceptible plants cross-pollinating to resistant plants...

Glyphosate resistance in annual ryegrass and other weeds is fast increasing in Australia... Resistance may result from immigration of resistant genes, not just from repeated applications of herbicides from the same mode of action... Since glyphosate resistance in weeds is so important for farming systems of Western Australia, it is necessary to know how many annual applications of glyphosate (at low and high rates) are required to develop glyphosate resistance in annual ryegrass in the absence of cropping, grazing and application of herbicides from other modes of action...

With annual ryegrass costing Australian grain growers more than $360 million a year in control measures, PhD student Joe Moore has joined the effort to look for alternatives to manage the weed's invasive spread.. "If we can establish that the endophyte is contributing to making annual ryegrass more of an invasive weed, it may be that elimination of the endophyte is a viable option for controlling the weed," Mr Moore says... To test if endophytes contribute to making the plant more competitive as a weed, Mr Moore removes the endophytes from annual ryegrass seeds, without damaging the seeds, so they can be grown and used for further experiments...

Rotation, herbicides, hay, crop competition and chaff collection all have a role in weed control 10 years of managing for resistance has decimated ryegrass populations.. The use of a chaff cart for the past three harvests is one tactic South Australian growers Paul and Brett Paterson are using to tackle ryegrass that is resistant to multiple herbicide groups... Frost puts freeze on effectiveness of ryegrass herbicide.. "Ideally, spray small ryegrass plants under warmer and frost-free periods for the best results with clethodim on ryegrass," said Dr Gill when addressing a GRDC Grains Research Update in Campbell Town, Tasmania, on the topic of controlling herbicide-resistant annual ryegrass in canola crops... We want the ryegrass to be actively growing and stress-free for clethodim to do the best job, so growers need to watch the weather forecasts closely to determine the best time to spray," Dr Gill said...

A new molecular tool developed by Australian and Japanese researchers could help farmers address herbicide resistance... Scientists say techniques are needed to detect mutations when they first occur, so that farmers can test for herbicide resistance in the field and manage weeds ... Dr Mui-Keng Tan, a molecular biologist with the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), together with researchers from Japan, investigated a technique called eco-tilling and found it offered a cheap and reliable means of detecting early signs of herbicide resistance in weeds...

IN A twist that might surprise many of Australia's 33,000 graingrowers and 'ryegrass haters' , a new school of thought suggests sowing more ryegrass may help to fight herbicide resistance with this weed... When a diploid * plant crosses with a tetraploid* plant, their genetic incompatibility often leads to the production of triploids*... Log in or register to leave a comment...
