In mixed farming systems grazing of the pasture phase can be used to minimise weed burdens but for continuous croppers, or within the cropping phase of mixed farming, some tillage might be needed for integrated weed management... From an overall systems perspective, limited and strategically timed tillage could form part of a productive, sustainable system... A central question emerges : How much damage is done to soil by occasional tillage, strategically applied, in an otherwise no-till system We seek to investigate this question based on the hypothesis: That the agronomic and economic benefits of a strategic tillage operation exceed any agronomic costs due to damage to soil structure...

Little could the couple have realised that it would be 30 years before the trial program would finally wind up, and by then be cemented into history as one of the most remarkable sources of knowledge on Australian dryland cropping... The new concept of direct-drilling crops using a non-residual herbicide (Sprayseed ) instead of ploughing was measured against conventional cultivation... "And if we take outcomes from the Mallee Sustainable Farming project alone, we estimate that the benefits of modifying and adopting the research findings from the Avon site amount to about $500 million each year in increased grain production and reduced wind erosion," Dr Rovira said...

The overall objective of this research program is to develop and deliver strategies for management of plant diseases of importance to SA grains industries... The increased frequency of cereals and greater adoption of susceptible cultivars is creating an opportunity for cereal cyst nematode (CCN) to re-emerge as a significant problem in the southern region... Subproject 3 continues existing monitoring and surveillance of new races and pathogen threats; this subproject will link with newly appointed grains biosecurity officer in SA. Subproject 4 focusses on rebuilding a joint capability in the southern region to address key issues in cereal nematology, most critically preventing CCN re-emerging as a significant problem...

GRDC research underway to search for frost-tolerant varieties - By Nicole Baxter.. Peter Roberts identifies frost as his most frustrating farming challenge, but the Western Australian grain grower says he is optimistic research is edging closer to delivering wheat varieties that are tolerant to these extreme cold snaps... In his role as chair of the Western Panel, Peter has had the opportunity to hear first hand from many growers about their research priorities: "As a panel we want to spend more time with growers so they see us as part of their business," he says...
